187 RWHP on a stock 944S2
#18
One difference: The "91 S2 DME included provision for remembering fault codes and allowing them to be accessed via the accelerator pedal, making the check engine light flash the codes. I'm not joking...it works. However, I have never had a code, so far, that led me to an actual failing component, even when I had a failing component.
Also, I have been following various listers 0-60 and 1/4 mile times and have become convinced that the '91's did get a power boost that was never official disclosed. Stock '91's, including mine, seem to run 0-60 averaging 6.3 to 6.5, with the occasional 6.1, while the other years seem to usually be 6.5 to 6.7. I was pretty shocked when my first run was 6.28s on a car with 155K miles, spare tire and all, and never even had a valve job.

What device did you use to determine that?

Yah I know! Actually I thought the price was fair given the labor rate in the SF Bay Area (independant shop in the SF Bay Area is ~$100/hour).
There was basically 2x jobs and they broke down as follows:
Job #1 - $100 parts, 5x hours of labor ($600 total)
------------------------------------------------
Cam Timing chain
Tensioned pad
Valve cover gasket
Camshaft seals
Miscellaneous grommets, o-rings, bolts, etc
Job #2 - $1,000 in parts, 10x hours of labor ($2,000 total)
-----------------------------------------------
Every belt (x4) and roller (x5)
Every fluid (coolant, engine-oil, tranny, brake)
Every filter (engine-oil, air, fuel)
Water pump (reconditioned)
Replace engine oil seals in the front
Replace oil cooler seals
Spark plugs
Distributor Cap
Distributor Rotor
Expansion tank cap
Spark plugs
Er... Can't remember if there was anything else but there probably was.
I got the job done at Carrera Motors in San Mateo (650-342-9955)

PorscheG96: I have a G-tech Pro, which of course can produce wacky results. But mine have been repeatable. I get 6.3 in cold weather, 6.5 when hot out. 14.8 quarter mile at 100mph when cold out, which is equal to about 95 to 96mph at the strip. I do not have any outside confirmation of the accuracy.

Thanks Andy.
That AMD chip seems to give you a boost right through the rev-range.
What does it feel like from the seat of the pants?
Karl.

To be honest the car didn't feel much faster , but then it was never going to with only a 8-9hp gain. What did feel different was how responsive the car is now, just a small prod on the gas and she's off!! The car was set up to run on Shell Optimax petrol ( only available in Europe I think )a fuel developed with the Ferrari F1 team ( or so they tell us ) that is 98ron rated which is one up from even Super unleaded. This allowed AMD to run a little more advance on the ignition which helps the car feel so crisp.
Definatley worth the money.

Finally took my S2 in for three dyno runs...thought I'd post the results. Car is an '89 with 116K. Engine is bone stock with the exception of underdrive pulleys. Tests performed on Dynojet dyno, with ambient temp of 79.4 degrees.
Rwhp range: 181.4 to 182.2
Torque: 180.8 to 182.0
Horsepower peaks around 5500;
Torque peaks at about 4200...stays up at 175 lb-ft until 5400 rpm, then drops off.

Are these actual or SAE corrected numbers?
Karl.
