--------------------------------- 20th Annual Lime Rock Park Vintage Festival on Labor Day weekend, Aug. 30-Sept. 2, 2002.
This year, the Vintage Festival begins a new era under the direction of Steve Earle, the president of General Racing, Ltd. and founder of the world renowned Monterey Historic Automobile Races. Joining Earle on the management team are Skip Barber, president of Lime Rock Park, and Murray Smith, founder of the Rockefeller Center Concours d’Elegance and an important figure in sponsorship development and event promotion.
Special events at this year’s Vintage Festival will include a tribute to Sam Posey on the 35th anniversary of his record setting accomplishment as the first driver to break the one-minute mark at Lime Rock, and a special Trans-Am race commemorating the 30th anniversary of the 1972 Trans-Am race at Lime Rock. A full field of significant Trans-Am cars will take part with race winner George Follmer, serving as guest of honor.
The four-day celebration includes the Concours in the Park, a Vintage & Historic Car Show with a special group of elite cars and several celebrity judges and the popular Show of Shelby’s on Sunday, Sept. 1. Racing for eight vintage groups begins with practice on Friday, followed by qualifying on Saturday, culminating with feature events on Monday. An eclectic swap meet of automotive memorabilia extends throughout the weekend.
“Our dedication to producing the ‘Ultimate Driving Machine’ has led us to align ourselves with events that celebrate the joy of driving and the great cars of the past which can provide that experience,” said Tom Purvas, Chairman and CEO of BMW of North America, LLC.
“The combination of the beauty of Lime Rock Park, the traditional excellence of the event, and a new management team whose philosophy we espouse, will guarantee that the Lime Rock Park Vintage Festival will continue to set higher and higher standards of excellence. We are looking forward to sharing our heritage with the thousands of enthusiasts who will attend the festival.”
The track and the promoter are equally excited about the partnership.
“Our partnership with BMW is a significant step for the future growth and development of the Lime Rock Park Vintage Festival,” said William McMinn, Lime Rock’s director of sales and marketing. “BMW is the epitome of performance, class, and prestige in the automotive industry and their association with the Vintage Festival will elevate the event to another level.
“BMW will be an active partner, and their astute knowledge and real interest in the vintage and historic racing scene will bring tremendous value to our fans and competitors through new exhibits, displays, functions and inter-active contests. We are very excited about all the possibilities that exist with BMW, and we look forward to working with them to make the Vintage Festival an even better event.”

Paul, I might want to go to this. One last effort on my car and it may be stable enough to make the trip. Call me you should have the number or shoot me and email with direction or a good meeting place. Riff may want to go as well I would shoot him a message! He is in the RI area as well.

I live in CT and have been to several of the vintage races at LRP. They are a lot of fun if you like the old cars. Most of these guys actually RACE them. It is not just a bunch of parade laps. Last year I watched a Lola T70 Mk3B and a Ferrari Spice GTP Lights car come together going into the left turn. It is a good show! Also, it does not get as super crowded as the other events at LRP.
Usually a GT40 or two shows up, plus there are always a bunch of early 911s and 914s.
