Default Are all bellhousings the same?

I have a 944 bellhousing and a 951 bellhousing. Are they interchangable? My 951 need to have a bolt extracted from it so if I can just use the 944 NA one I dont have to mess with it. Anyone know? I wasnt sure since the starter ring on the 951 is different from the 944.

Thanks
Brian

I've never had a NA bellhousing to compare, but I've been told that they share the same casting, but they're machined differently.
If both are out of the car, you might be able to see the difference. (not sure what exactly the difference is)

The 951 944 bellhousings are different. The starter mounting is slightly offset on the 951 to allow for the larger starter ring and additional teeth. A 944 bellhousing WILL NOT work on a 951 (starter binds badly). I don't know about the other way but I doubt the starter gear would engage deep enough on a 944 starter ring.

I can attest that a 951 bellhousing will not fit an NA. Been there done that, lol.

There are actually 3 different bell housing, not including the ones for 2.5 16v cars, S2 and 968. All the 16v cars only have one opening for the 1 crank position sensor. 2.5 16V cars have a deeper one. One the N/A cars, the early ones have a different part# after 85.5

My S2 has two openings, just one sensor.

But blocks and torque tubes, and starter are all the same, correct?

So, for example, if you had a spare 951 clutch, pressure plate, throwout, ring gear, flywheel, fork and bellhousing, that could be all be installed on an 87 N/A?

Looking at salvaging some used parts for a Chump/Lemons car...

^^ Would the NA DME recognize the extra teeth on the turbo flywheel?
