OT- Want to learn Photoshop, recommended books/ websites?
I've seen that plenty of you on the board are pretty good with Photoshop, and I'd like tot ry my hand at it. Just bought a new digital camera, and I'd like to be able to edit/ touchups picks, mess around with stuff, etc. Any recommedations?

Do a search for "Kai's Power Tips", some great tutorials. This was Krause's tips when he made Kai's Power Tools decades ago with HSC software. Which went public as MetaTools and Kai was driving around in a new F355-F1 with "MTLS" plates. Then they merged with Fractal Design to form MetaCreations, etc...

The MacAcadamy videos or the lynda.com CD series are the next best thing to classroom instruction. Kinda dry, but much better than a book. It just gets disjointed when they try to explain pixels and bit depth and such via text. Videos helped me out a lot, that and a Jr. College class.
See if a local library/ college/ (also try a web search) rents them, that's the ticket. I used to work at a service bureau that rented them - great idea.

adobe's classroom in a book is the best way to go. i've been in the industry since version 2 and have taught classes on the subject. they really give you a good place to start and are easy to follow. should be available at most large bookstores and online at adobe.

No, no, not the classroom in a book! Those bore me to tears!!! Which means, I didn't learn anything, I wanted to work on MY art!
I just picked up "How to do everything with Photoshop 7". It has been very easy to use as reference, which is what I prefer to do. Also the Visual Quickstart Guides by Peachpit Press have been good.
I have learned more by just exploring, I hate to say.

I used to be an mid-level executive at Metacreations. I then spun out a company called Curious Labs to take over publishing/development of a few of the old Meta products. Now I'm working on getting a group of those same products back together under the same roof. My roof.
Anyway, the 355 with the MTLS tags was John Wilzcak's car, not Kai Krause's. John was a co-founder of HSC and MetaTools with Kai. Their first software hit was titled Kai's Power Tools; originally a collection of photoshop filter settings and technique tips, and it evolved into a set of cool pshop plug-ins. Metatools followed that success with Bryce, then Goo.
Wilczak has both a red and yellow 355. The red car wears the MTLS plate. He also owned the Tank bar in Santa Barbara. Some former staffers at Meta tried really hard to spread a runor around SB that the Tank was a gay bar. Controversial leaders get no love from ditched employees.
Kai doesn't have a Ferrari, he last owned/drove a Land Rover SUV. He didn't even have a drivers license until just a few years ago. It's was actually kinda comical hearing stories about him learning to drive at 40 years old. Thank Valkyrie that he didn't have a 355.
Kai is now in Germany, bought a riverside castle, and has set-up a retreat of sorts, for wayward software visionaries.
John is still in SB, rumored to be trying to revive the old Meta empire.
And I'm trying to put my own collection together.
Who knows...
...good for you Danno to have awareness of Meta. It was a magical collection of products from the remarkable golden days of time in the history of the desktop computer.
Cheers,
Steve Cooper

Here are a few sites that I've found helpful:

The Luminous Landscape
As Simple as Photoshop
About.com
Really Useful Page
As for books, it depends on what you need. I like Ben Wilmore's "Adobe Photoshop 7 Studio Techniques" and Gregory Georges "50 Fast Digital Photo Techniques", but neither are really basic books. I guess the classroom in a book would be a good place to start.
Have fun! Pat

BTW, I bought my Mac back in '86 just to run Photoshop. Back then even in monochrome, it was considered science-fiction of sorts.
Steve, thanks for the info. So I guess Little Kai lied to me about his dad owning the Ferrari, bastard! Good thing they deported him... twice! The first time he snuck back in through Canada... gotta tighten our borders against these infidel foreigners!
Yeah, Wilczak wasn't very good for the company. Stock price went from 40 after the merger to 2.5 or so in a couple years, then they booted him. I never did like the Tank, too sterile for a bar/club. It was laid out too much like a museum or aquarium, but the sharks were cool. It's a Sharkey's now and the big fish tank behind the bar's still there. It's covered up and they use it for storage, but every once in a while, they have a special party and throw a mermaid or two in there!
Goo is probably one of the most fun and useless pieces of software ever!
