Post corner balancing

Is this worthwhile to have done during the alignment process? I don't track or DE the car, but will be installing H&R sport springs to my cab and having the rear lowered at the same time.

Damian:
In my personal opinion, corner balancing is not necessary. Just get a good alignment and you'll be fine.

-Zoltan.

PS: Even though I track and autocross my car, I haven't corner balanced it yet, and due to lack of funds, won't be doing that for some time. (read new clutch!)

from what i read no.

Now if you didnt use the car as a taxi and you really drove the car like it was made to be driven ..... yada yada

unless of course if shaving .001 of a second off the turn into the driveway is important to you.

BTW did you sell the coupe yet?

Tom, it is yellow, but no, I don't drive it like a taxi! The coupe went to a friend of the NNJR Autocross chairman, thanks Z-man again for directing him my way.

Zoltan, new clutch? Ouch.

I was never happy with the way my car drove until I took it to a high end alignment shop. I had a four wheel alignment with corner balancing done, and had the wheels spun balanced ON the car. Keep in mind, without adjustable spring perches, it is not a true corner balance. All they can do is use the rear eccentrics to weight jack the car as close as possible. But after all this work, my car drives like it is on glass. In the future, I would never do anything less.

Our cars are not econoboxes. It is in the fine tuning that makes them a cut above. I would recomend that you do it once. Drive it, and make your own conclusions if it is worth it a second time.

Try this: (maintenance since last fall):
- New wiper motor (Nov. 2002)
- New master/slave cyl (Nov. 2002)
- New CV Joints at rear (Nov. 2002)
- New ball joints/control arms (Feb. 2003)
- New Rod bearings / oil pan gasket (Feb. 2003)
- AND: New clutch. (March 2003)

And I bought Clem's old 16" wheels in March just before the clutch went. But I guess I'll have to wait for race tires...

I refuse to tally up the final bill. So does my wife!

Obsessive? Who said I was obsessive?

None of what I had R&R was broken: the only thing that broke on my car was the H2O pump last summer at the Glen, but that's a whole other story.

The trick is to maintain, not repair! hehe.

I'll say again, 'track bad, wax good'! Dave went through clutch and motor as well, no? And he does only autox I think. Oh well, there will be some nice new motors zipping around NJersey soon.

The PO definatly sold at the exact right time. At least I'll have a new top & front end of my motor, and a whole new clutch system. Plus the other stuff the PO put in like all new weatherstripping/ seals, wiper motor, fuel lines, and headlights.

A local porsche shop quoted me $310.00 for an alignment, which includes corner balancing. Can someone describe to me what that is?

No, I wouldn't (and I don't) worry about corner-balancing on a street car. I'd be far more interested in just getting the alignment dead-on.
