Question Engine upgrade?

Hi!

I´ve been thinking of either upgrading to another Porsche or upgrading the engine.

I´ve got an S2 and really like it, it´s just a bit weak over 200 km/h and shouldn´t have any trouble handling another 100 hp or so I guess.

So, should I go for a new engine or buy a 928 GT/S4 instead. Since it has to be road legal here in Sweden it would be difficult to turbo-/supercharge it and pass the yearly check...

Anyone who has any knowledge or tips on what to do, I really love the car but since I´m an adrenaline junkie I need a bigger dose of speed...

I was thinking of spending around $4-5000 on the engine...

Anders,
it's cheaper to buy a 951.There's plentiful 951's in Sweden ! Then you have all of the possibilties to get more HP, much cheaper than upgrading your S2.It can be done also legally in Sweden.

Although I think the 928 is a great car I think you will be multiplying your problems by having a V8 imagine twice the belts twice the valves.. plus all the work on the s2...

can you take the 3L s2 to say 3.3 or 3.4 L...rework the head, rework the crank and still be street legal?

The thing is that I don´t really like turbo engines.
This since I drive more than 50.000 kilometers a year in the Porsche (about 31.000 miles) and also during the winter which can be quite cold and icy.

And then we have the whole insurance thing, the 951 would cost me around 300 bucks a month while the S2 is 130 and the 928 S4 is 165... So I guess the 928 will be cheaper to own than a 951 even though it´s more expensive to service and drive.

And there are few things that can beat the sound of that engine and a with a RMB..

Olli, thanks for the CD - got it yesterday in the mail. Excellent! :-)

I'd guess that if you went absolutely bananas you could build something like 3.2l out of that S2 engine... with MAP, hot cams and such, you could probably get 250+ hps (of course, I have no real knowledge, but I just like playing with ideas)

It wouldn't be cheap though, and since you're driving so much, I'd think a 928 would be just perfect. Never driven one, but everybody's saying they're the best for long trips

Deepice: You can´t really do any big mods to the engine without making it illegal over here. On cars newer than 1977 it´s only allowed to raise the power output with 10%. There are some ways to go around the system but It´s quite complicated.

But as long as it´s not obvious with a lot of extra plumbing for turbochargers or superchargers and the emissions are OK it shouldn´t be a problem.

There are for example a few VW Golf VR6 with Turbos and NOS with around 400 hp that are considered road legal. But most of the time they have an extra engine for the yearly checkup or disconnect the turbo and let the engine suck free air.

It´s not considered illegal to have a turbo in the car - as long as it´s not used. But since you could have some bad luck and get stopped by the police and have them check your car I don´t really feel like being an outlaw. To complicated...

I´ve even heard of some Harley clubs that have an extra exhaust owned by the club that anyone can use when they need to make their bikes legal...

The system is quite silly really...

The Hot Rods are different, when you start from scratch with a car you can register it as a hobby veichle and it will be a one of a kind really... You have to show calculations of what kind of power the chassie can handle - quite a bit of paperwork... :-)

There is one Volvo stationwagon with a stroked supercharged Chevy 350 with NOS that has made it through the inspection... But it was probably spent about ten times the build time on paperwork...

I guess I´m coming close to OT...

While the S2 may not have the top end a 944Turbo or a 928 has, look on the other side: with all that low end torque, you've got globs of power needed for exit speed in the corners!

On the track, yes, the higher hp cars leave me in the dust on the straights, but often, I am able to catch them in the corners. The S2 engine is a wonderful powerplant: yes, it's a little bit low on the power, but it does offer smooth, linear acceleration and plenty of handling to keep up with most modern sports cars.

That said, have you considered upgrading to a 968? With 240hp and variocam (and NO TURBO), that should give you a little more speed that you crave... You can transplant the 968 engine, or sell the S2 and buy the 968!

Z-Man:

I have thougt about buying a 968 instead and have taken two different cars out for a test drive. They are ok to drive but not as rough as the 944. The 968 easily goes where you tell it to go and is silk smooth in the engine. The 944 S2 is a bit rougher and i get more pleasure throwing it around than what I did with the 968:s.

But they have A/C which is quite nice..

Actually managed to get myself a good deal on a mint condition red 968 cab with _all_ possible options except for the tiptronic (good taste there)...

Called to get a quote for an insurance and decided not to do the deal because of just that. It would cost me about 235 bucks a month just to own the car.

Since the insurance companys look at these things:

Owner/driver age
How long time you´ve had your license
Accident frequency for car model and driver.
The sum of a specific set of parts for the car.
Where you live/park your car.
Number of thefts of car model.
How much you drive annualy.

So on my plus side:
I park my car by my own house in a "quiet neighbourhood.
I´ve never been involved in any car accident.

Minus side:
I´m young, age 23.
Ive had my license revoked once (speeding) for three months with a BIG price tag on the ticket and had to take my license all over which in Sweden is not so easy. All in all I was with without the license for five months.
Porsches have lots of power.
Porsche parts are expensive.
Porsches are in a lot of accidents.
Porsches are often stolen.
I drive a lot (+30.000 miles/year).

I´ve been thinking of getting a cheaper car to drive around in, a daily beater and simply use the Porsche as a pleasure machine..
But hey, it´s nice to own a Porsche but they really are supposed to be on the road.

And, the 928S4 is cheaper(!?) in insurance...

But of course most of all I´d like to keep the S2 and upgrade the engine.. Would be nice to smoke the 951 for a change.

Damn, my english may even be good enough for others to understand. I at least hope so.. :-)

/Anders
