Timing Belt Retention - 1200km too early?
The card that came with my timing belt from porsche indicates retention should be done at 3,200 to 4,000 km (that works out to 1800 miles+)
I did mine early at about 1200 km as my mechanic said it would be fine. I'm a bit worried that I did it too soon now. Should I have it done again? I'd hate to pay again for the same work but I'd hate even more for the belt to break <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" />

1200k does seem kind of soon.
The need to retension comes from the strech in the belt during early operation. Since the typical proceedure is to install and retension after XX miles and then not touch it again until replacment leds me to believe that there is fixed amount of strech that will occur. Otherwise you will retension every xx miles. If your belt already streched by 1200k then you are fine. If not then it won't be so good.
I had mine done a few years back and also retensioned the proper number of miles later. I actualy found that one day (I forget how many miles later) the water temp shot way up just after a cold start (5 min driving). Shut the car down, waited 5min and then drove home with normal temps. It turned out that the water pump slipped on the back side of the timing belt. I tightend it (my is an 88 with auto tensioner) and have not had a problem since. I have about 26k on the belt now and will probably change it after I finish my clutch job.
