Post Power locks..I'm confused

Ok in my S2 it has the central locking system with the integrated alarm system. Now I just realized that by using my key in the drivers door, it does NOT lock the passenger door with it. It sets the alarm and the little LEDs light up on both sides, but the passenger door does not lock, and you can open it without the alarm going off.

The little locking switch on the console does not seem to do much of anything that I can tell. If the ignition is on, it has a red dot in the switch that lights up, and it sounds like the doors lock, the LEDs come on, but the locks don't go down. Maybe it only locks them to the outside or something? The owners manual didn't give me an explanation that made much sense. The switch does the same thing if the ignition is off as well, LEDs come on, but the doors don't (or don't seem to) lock.

So basically it looks like to me that I have to either lock the passneger door manually from the inside by pushing it down, or run around to the other side of the car and use the key on it also...pain in the butt if you ask me.

I'm also considering a keyless entry setup for it, so does anybody happen to know how easy it is to wire it into the existing power lock system and if it will also arm the alarm at the same time? Any help and suggestions will be appreciated!

I've experienced the same thing, as have many others. Do a search. It has been covered, but as I recall not completely answered. At some point I intend to install an alarm for the keyless entry feature. Sam's club has a great deal on one of the Bulldog alarms Bulldog. I'm sure some will scoff at a low-end alarm system, but I intend to use it primarily for the keyless entry/hatch release. I've wired an alarm before. It's not particularly fun, but not brain surgery either. The one good thing about the Porsche power locks is that the actuators are already there. Good luck.

Yeah I've been reading through the archives and the word has been that if you have central locking (which I do) then BOTH doors should lock when you lock the car from either side, but it doesn't. The LEDs and all that seem to work fine, the lock just work like it apparently should, unless I'm wrong and I don't have central locking. But if I don't what's that switch in the console for?? I guess I can live with locking the passenger door manually but the whole idea of power locks and still having to do that sucks.

Mine used to lock both doors with the key at the drivers door but about 2 weeks ago stopped locking the passenger door.
I really don't know where to start looking.

I wish I had that problem. I have yet to have a 944/951 with power locks.

There is a small piece of plastic that attaches the door locks to the power mechanism. They are like $2 each. I replaced both on my car (one needed it, the other was close). There is a small round hole on one end that was cracked and allowed the metal piece to slide out. I wish they had used metal instead of plastic, but oh well.

Part # 944 537 511 00

Good luck,

That's something I'll check on but mine works on either side with the key, locks it fine. But it only works on the side I use the key on, it doesn't lock or unlock the other side along with it like it's supposed to. I'm guessing it might be a relay that's messed up somewhere..gonna pull up the wiring diagram for this system later and see if I can't trace a problem somehow. I was hoping someone here might have some idea of where to start...

When you hear galloping, dont think it is zebras, it is probably horses.

We have all had the same exact problem you describe and it was the same solution everytime, the plastic peice mentioned in the above post. It is an extremely common problem easily solved for 4 dollars.

Unless you like to troubleshoot wiring and relays just pop your door panels off and look at the plastic arms right under the door lock mechanism.

No I'm not particularly fond of playing with relays heh...Takes me forever to understand this stuff..I'll have to pop the panels off and check that out. I wasn't sure how it could still lock on each side with the key if it was broken, but seeing as you guys have more experience with this problem, which is why I posted here in the first place, I'll take your advice and not make extra work for myself

Thanks for the replies!

Same problem with mine; same fix. I fixed mine so long ago, it's broken again! Apparently what's happening with yours is that you don't need the plastic piece to lock the door with the key. Therefore, whichever door you use the key in works, the other does not. Probably *both* of your plastic pieces are broken, you just didn't discover it on the driver door b/c you always used a key. Am I making any sense? Jeeze it's been a long day. Anybody have any great ideas on how to make a State's Attorney disappear?

(j/k about the disappearing thing. Please don't send me the name of an uncle who can "do me a favor!" )

That makes complete sense to me. That's what I wasn't understanding was that you apparently DON'T need the power to lock it with the key. And I'm guessing the things being broken is why my central lock button in the console doesn't do anything.

So I'm gonna order the little things and hopefully solve the problem. What I'm wondering is how long I drove around and parked the car at places with the passenger door always being unlocked! I know it was working when we got this car about 2 years ago but it could have happened anytime since then and I didn't notice it until now. Scary thought..I guess the LEDs blinking scared ppl away enough to not mess with it huh?

Just curious,

If you lock the passenger door with the key, does it lock the drivers door? If it does, then one of the two microswitches are probably at fault, or it could be a misalignment of the door lock solenoid which physically moves the locking mechanism.
Unfortunately, getting at the microswitches is a bit of a chore, as you have to disassemble a lot of the inner mechanisms in order to extract the door lock itself. I know, as I have fixed my 1986 944 Turbo which was suffering similar problems as you described (including the switch on the center console).
On my car, it turned out to be a bad microswitch on the passenger door and a misaligned locking solenoid on the drivers door. Give it a try and I hope this helps you out.

No I tried that to see if it would work..it didn't. Key in driver door locks only driver door, key in pass door locks only pass door. But the LEDs come on on both sides when either is used. But the plastic things being broken makes sense because that wouldn't affect the wires to the LEDs so they still work. I'm glad to hear it's (hopefully!) just a $4 fix and I don't have to go digging around in wires and relays to find the problem.

I am having the exact same problem. Thanks for pointing that out. And thanks for the tip on the small plastic parts.

Sounds like me now BECAUSE I pulled the fuse for the locks (they kept unlocking for no reason).

Check the fuse, maybe that's it. IIRC it's number 15?
