So...I was looking around the interweb thinking how good it would be if I could get coil on plug ignition for the 944, and found this:

If you scroll to the bottom of the page it tells you the up and coming megasquirt pnp models about to be released. 35 pin Bosch motronic is among them which is cooooll. Just thought I'd post this in case anyone was thinking about megasquirting their car and didn't know this.

Anyway the question I have is this : Does megasquirt have a data logging function if you install a wideband?.

Yes MS will do datalogging and can interface with a wideband.

COP would work for DOHC 944 models (like the S2 listed on that site), but I'm not sure how well you'd be able to fit it on an 8V.

The wideband must have a 0-5 volt output, most do though. You will also need to know the mapping of it, most are 0 volts = 10:1 AFR to 5 volts = 20:1 AFR but it varies. The MS will use the wideband for all its O2 related calculations.

It will only log anything when your laptop is hooked up. Current MegaSquirts do not have onboard logging, unless you buy one of the extra devices for that. MegaSquirt 3 will have onboard logging to SD cards.
