944 Outer Door Handle Repair
#16
OK, know what you mean.I usually work with this rod/balljoint from that hole where handle it self is placed (outside) there is quite little room, but you can lift the handle upwards a little bit and rotate it.This should work.Remember be careful not to scartch paint !

What i forget to mention; remove that locking unit and you have no problems.Check out Sean's pic #2.Mark first loaction of the lock unit and then loosen those two hex bolts. Then you are able to lift the handle upwards and you can access easily to all necessary parts.

i took off the handle and took a screwdriver and pryed the peice off the little ball. then i screwed it up and put it all back in and togeather... door still does not work, so i took it all off and did it again but turning the plastic peice the other direction... still door does not work. i put it in proble 10 different places and have had no luck. does this mean i jsut need a new peice or what. obviously somehting is wrong with mine. but hey at least my inside handle works now. i must have said the F work more times in that last few hours than i ever have in my life. i friggin hate german stuff dammit! that was the most anoying thing ive ever done.

OK, i guess i had once this same problem.I suppose you are able to open the door from outside handle but inside won't work. This is caused by that "yellowish" hassele part (inside the door) where all of these rods goes.i pulled out this part and moved some parts to different location. You will understand it when you take it out. It's a little bit difficult to explain since i don't know the english (or finnish) name for this part. It's odd but you can lock the door in such a way that it wount open inside but works fine from outside. That black Lock button plays no part of this...

I have read several threads on the door handle repair. This is the first one that mentions removing the catch mechanism on the door edge. What additional access does that give, or which parts will it free up? I am having a hard time visulizing this.

Still don't have an answer for my question about how a ball link can go out of adjustment when it's still connected to the ball???
Well it can't.
Your "trigger" or finger pull is breaking at the pivot in the handle. The pivot is swedged in place and has to be drilled out to remove the finger pull. When the finger pull cracks it acts like the ball link is out of adjustment.
I've been searching my systems for the pictures I have of this problem and so far have not come up with them but I have the next best thing; a pair of door handles off of an 86 944. I will get and scan them and post the pictures of what I'm talking about.

When you remove the catch mechanism on the door edge you can move upwards this "yellowish" part which is located inside of the door. All rods are connected to this part. When you move this part upwards you are able to disconncet/reconnect all necessary rods from that bigger outside handle hole.It took sometime to me to figure this out.If you do not do that you might have to remove window, window railing etc. as it told in factory shop manual and also in some well known 944 websites. The only thing you have to be carful is not to scratch the paint.Use somekind of paint protection. I have changed 968 handle to six 944's during this summer and i can do it quit quick.

This "adjustment" can be done without disassembling the door panel, from the hole where the door handle mounts. You pop the ball off, pull out of hole, adjust, and then use long thin tool of your preference to pop back on.
The problem is the cam that is on the end of the trigger assembly is worn down over the years. The ball is just compensating for this. The trigger canm will wear to a pint where you cannot operate the door correctly.
