Buying a 1983 944 Help!
Ok, a friend of mine is buying a 1983 944 with a rebuilt engine. What should I look for on that year? I will be test driving it so is there something that I could do to tell something is wrong? Besides timing belt kit, waterpump and clutch, what should I ask? How long is long for this car to be sitting?? I wanna be sharp when I ask this guy questions
He thinks its a uero-spec. How do I tell?
It has phone dials, are those stock? maybe b/c its a euro model?
This car is apparently MINT! Asking price $7,000CND. Seems high?
Sorry for this just alittle diff from the S2.
Thanks GUYS!

Burning Brakes
Does it have power steering or not?
Does it have a rear swaybar? Some came without.
Does the power antenna work? It should be on the front drivers side fender.
Make sure the manual sunroof latches are in good working order. Its not hard to tell, just open and shut them making sure they shut tightly.
Does it have the sport package? I think this was just manual steering, a rear sway bar, and sport seats. I'm not sure if there's a way to tell this by option code. I haven't had much luck finding info on this. (granted i haven't looked that hard)
I don't think there's any more specific 83 questions to ask, just the rest of the main 944 questions.
Good Luck!

Hey man thanks alot for your answers
How does that exhaust on your car sound?
Hey I have a 1989 gsxr-750 with what I believe a stage 3 jet kit, and yoshimara exhaust. My question is this Ken, all 3 but cylinders are good but it sounds and feels like I am having problems with the 4th. Could it be the jet kit screwing things up??

Don't forget the motor mounts. Also does it still have the rubber center clutch or has it been upgraded to spring loaded. What about the clutch slave cyl. also..

I bought my 83 with 88K miles which had been sitting for a while. It now has 202K.
PCNA spec vs. Euro
Easiest way to tell are the bumpers. The Euro bumpers are smaller and don't have the blocky rubber bumperettes that the PCNA cars do. The front bumper has integrated white parking lights and little bumperettes like the 968. The rear bumper has a thin black plastic strip.
Also:
*Power antenna may be mounted in the back if it's a Euro car.
*Many Euro cars did not have a sunroof.
*Stock wheels in 83 were 15" cookie cutters.
Other things to check:
*Alternator ever been replaced?
*A/C working and/or converted to R-134?
*Any cracks in the firewall near the clutch master cylinder? (Costly to repair)
*Rear hatch leaks?
*Battery tray leaks?
*Wheel bearings? (particularly rear)
They are solid cars and inexpensive to buy up front, but tend to require more maintenance than the late model 944s if you drive them daily.

My '83 euro with foglights (lousy picture, my car doesn't have gray spots)

The lights in the bumper are also high beams, not only parking lights.

Yes, the Euro version had a higer engine compression ratio than the PCNA version and developed slightly more HP. Also, I think the Euro cars didn't have catalytic converters, whereas most of the PCNA 83 cars did.
Magnus, thanks for the clarification. I've never driven an early Euro 944.

It's a fair amount louder and deeper than stock. I compaired it next to an S2cab with the stock exhuast and I liked mine alot better. The S2 started hissing at the higher RPMs where mine just rumbled more. My only problem with it was the fitment on my car. I bought it used, so I may not have gotten the exact one I needed(ie early vs late) but it worked out in the end.
As for the bike, did you put the jet kit in yourself? Perhaps when the carb was put back together the spring didn't seat correctly, or the rubber seal came out of the grove. Or maybe just the carb "door" on #4 is gummed up. I'd start out buy just spraying some carb cleaner in and seeing if that does anything. If it doesn't, maybe open the carbs and see if everything is in good shape. Make sure you put all four of the same jets in and all the needles are at the same height. After that I'm not too sure what to look for. Perhaps there's a small intake or exhaust leak somewhere? Have you checked the other stuff like spark plugs and wires? After that I think things get alittle more difficult. Maybe your valves need adjusting. Or a million other things. Hope there was something helpful in there.
