Post "Blown" head gasket (w/ pics)

Not so sure the mechanic got it right when he diagnosed a blown head gasket. The water pump was definitely screwed, but the gasket looks okay. At least you can see how a 250K+ n/a engine holds up. Other than carbon, it looks pretty good! Maybe you guys can see where the gap may be:

Michelle,

Just by the pics, I can't tell if the headgasket was blown, but a baad waterpump can overheat, obviously!

Did you find any antifreeze in the oil, and vice-versa?

I'd be a pain, and question everything the mechanic does, and if he did indeed misdiagnose it, he should put it back together without charge for his labor (I'd put in a new gasket, while it's out).

Good luck!

Hey Michelle,

I thought ya sold that car? Or did this happen to the new owner?

Anyway, if he saw oil in the water, it could have been bad oil cooler seals. You might want to mention that to him and have him tell you how he came to that conclusion.

Good luck!

Tifo

The mechanic told me it was a blown head gasket and I took his word and I'm doing the work myself. I get to work on it periodically when my schedule allows. I have a buyer, but I told him I would fix this before turning the car over to him. I never saw water/oil, but the car has maybe 2 miles on it since it overheated. I pulled over and had it towed the minute the light came on.

What is the small black mark in the center of the back of the head. Right on the fire ring seal area. Just dirt, or carbon? Looks like it didn't hurt to replace it anyway.
