Quick question: How much grease for the CV joints?

I did a search, but none mentioned volume...The Haynes manual says "A little bit" but I've seen people just fill up the boot and stuff the excess into the joints. The bottom of my boot is dry. I don't know what that means.

I'm gonna do a writeup afterwards, with lots of pictures. Hopefully not as blurry.
Side question, is Coastal good grease? It's Moly-based but doesn't mention high temperatures. I noticed that one side of the half-shaft was almost clay-like (presumably due to the exhaust). The grease that's in there now smells pleasantly like an old Jeep, the Coastal smells like a trucker's roid cushion.
I was gonna use Mobil 1 synthetic stuff, but it made no mention of being moly based...It was red...Cool.

I have just used what came with the boot kits. Seems like I packed the joint area as full as it would get and then put a bit more before sliding the boot over. I dont see a need for filling the boot with grease, seems like that filling it is a bad idea. The boot would not flex properly because the grease would be constantly getting squished around as the boot goes around making the boot fail prematurely. The main function of the boot is to keep the grease from spinning out of the joint and keeping the dirt out, not holding pressure on the grease inside.

Indeed, and what should this grease look like? Should it be more like toothpaste or more like thick, thick motor oil? My inner CV was the former and my outer the latter...Seems like the latter's the way to go, but the stuff I bought seems pretty thick. Dunno. I think I'm gonna go get some high-temp stuff. I'm guessing the exhaust heat caused all the problems in the first place.

When I repacked mine I used some Mobile 6 we had in the hanger. It was about the consistency of toothpast and light brown in color. I'm not sure if it's available at the auto stores, but it's good stuff.

If you buy a kit with a new boot it will be delivered with a tube of grease. I think it contains 80g of grease. That is the amount of grease needed for one joint. It is enough to completely fill the joint with grease and cover the inside of the boot with a layer of grease.
This is the inner part of a worn out joint I replaced last week

Yes it was the consistency of toothpaste. I would say thick is better so it stays in the joint rather than run out into the boot where it doesnt do any good for the cv.
