I did not leave it on long, took some creamy peanut butter and rubbed it on till it was gone. At the end of the winter about a quarter sized chunk was chewed away

So it was just the smell of peanut butter that got them chewing on the rubber? Hmmm.. maybe PB isn't such a good idea. We do get mice in the garage up here in the winter...
