How do I tell? It came off a 944S with the M474 suspension stuff.

Put an open end wrench on it that fits, or tighten a crescent wrench down on it and measure the jaw gap. Or get a part number off the rubber bushings and look it up in PET. Need the letter suffix.

yea just try open wrenches heh. should be....14-18mm

Here are the possibilities of the front sway bar sizes by ascending order... 944 343 707 00 - 20mm. Early cars came with this bar. Next is 944 343 707 01 - 21.5mm. The third bar is 944 343 706 00 - 23mm. It seems to be tied into the M030 option for earlier non turbo cars. The fourth bar is 944 343 706 02 - 24mm, the front sway bar for the 86 year turbo. The rest don't apply. I think the third choice is probably the bar you have. Not worth much, I don't think...

I bought a standard/non-M030 951 sway set for $30...just a reference if that's what they end up being.

I looked at some rubber piece on the bar and the last of the numbers were 951 793 30. I looked at Pelican and it says 30mm. I couldn't put a 7/8 open end wrench over it. I couldn't find a bigger wrench either.

That looks like the 26.8 bar I ran on my 83...which is not at all what was supposed to come with the car. The 26.8 is hollow.

1" = 25.4 mm.

If the bushing number was 951 343 793 30 M100, it is the 26.8mm bar. It is worth a few dollars. The 30mm bar is too big to fit the bushing.

Ok I know I'm going to sound dumb here... but what exactly is the bushing? Haha.

think of the rubber black bushings in your suspension as the cartilage that separate your bones. they basically act to allow a measured amount of movement between the metal objects under great stress (that you are talking about in this thread).

they act to dampen bumps and vibrations, and help the suspension sway to exact design restrictions... as the bushings begin to age or deform for any reason, play is introduced into the system, and dampening of vibrations reduced.

in the case of our beloved, front-engine Porsches, our sway bar, control arm bushings, etc, are usually subject to a high level of exposure to engine component lubricants, (your crankcase oil, and ps fluid)... which in turn destoys the bushings before normal load bearing does. it is a very good idea to learn how to replace these items, because while the replacement bushings are not very expensive, the labor to do them, IS.

once replaced, many of the annoying vibrations and blunt road bumps will be eliminated and your car will feel more securely planted on the road, they way Porsche originally built your car.
