Question Emissions Tests & Perf chips

I've got two opinions on this so far. The Porsche Dealership mechanic said you'll never pass a test with perf chips in DME/KLR. My private mechanic said you could.

Anybody have some first hand experience on this? I hate to go in there and switch chips when I don't have to, but i also don't want to do my emissions test twice.

Thanks for your input!

IN theory a performance chip would help in this department because of its function. A friends car just passed and the mech told him it was perfect all on the low end of the emit ion gassing. He has an APC chip I think but am not sure.

Stefan,

When I bought my '87 951 in December, I needed the etest as well. And it passed. I have The APE stage II chips.

Well, it really all depends on how the chip was designed. Some chips go all out and dump lots of fuel and advance the timing very much. Other chips spend more time with tweaking the chip to pass emissions with an increase in power. I ordered a two program chip that can be switched between race and street legal with a flip of a switch. I have not yet tried passing emissions with either setting. The race setting ignores the oxygen sensor and richens the mixture and advances the timing - very similar to the euro 944 (albeit with the cat and lower compression pistons). Although I can't be sure, I doubt that my race chip setting will ever pass emisions - but the standard setting should work fine.

My 924S just passed Ohio's e-check with an Autothority chip and a new aftermarket cat. The DME was set at +1 click from base of 0. The guy at the E-check station marveled at what excellent numbers my car produced during the test.

I know it wasn't a 951, but I hope that helps just the same.

My 951 with Europroducts chips has passed the finnish tests (same all over the EU) with no problems.

Thanks guys!

I have the 951 with Europroducts like Olli , so I'm hoping it will fly. I can't see there being much of a difference at 2500 rpm or so where they test at. The car just barely passed with stock chips when I bought it 3 years ago.

Failed the last test a year ago, but that was due to burning oil I suspect Paid to have the O2 sensor replaced which still didn't help, then got the exemption citing a possible Cat converter which is more than $500 to fix. The rebuild was this spring so I'll see how it goes for the next test.
