alternator on my 84 is squeeling when I first start the car. Can I replace just the brushes or do I have to replace the alternator.

Are you sure it is not just a loose belt??

That would also cause squeeling on start ups.

you can try local electrical shops, i can think of rapco which is one here locally, but i'm sure that would vary by where you are. the guy that works there has assorted electrical mumbo-jumbo all over the place. i got new brushes for my starter. so give the local electrical guru a shot.

I don't see how brushes could cause a squeal, low voltage-but not a squeal.

You would think it is bearing related.

Something funny that I had happen was a squeal on startup that I thought was the A/C, after I had a loose heat shield on the cat. tacked back on the squeal was gone.
