Aligning headlight buckets to nose panel?

The mounts on both sides have 3 bolts and a backing plate (because the holes are pretty large). Loosen these up, and you can move each bucket around. (You may have to take off the fender liner to reach the outboard ones - I don't remember which way the bolts go...)
Then it's trial and error, but pretty straight forward.

The problem i had on my 86 was that that white undercoating goo they spray all over everything makes it near impossible to slide the outer piece around, without scraping the area clean. The bolts go from the outside, in. It seemed to me tho that some adjustment could be required on the closed position (rotationally) and I never quite figured that out. The pivot adjustment only moves it up/down, fore/aft

Don't know about an early car, but my late 951 had small shims between the body and the triangular mounting bracket. I was able to fine tune mine by loosening everything up, adding/removing shims as necessary, and then tightened everything up.
