I'll second Jim with the injectors and even lifter replacement to quiet the engine.
Checking the exhaust manifold off the car for cracks and replacing all the related exhaust gaskets, as well as the hood pad and the foam around the shifter will help as well.

It is possible that your muffler is just "old". Replacing it could help. It is possible that one of the bearings in one of your accessories is going (Alternator, AC Compressor, Power Steering Pump).
The important thing for you to remember is that a rebuild will only help with smoothness of the engine if compression and leakdown numbers are not even across the cylinders.
EDIT- Also, when you replaced your engine mounts, did you replace them with the OEM ones, or the aftermarket ones? The aftermarket ones are not as smooth as the OEM ones (I know).

I can't believe you guys missed FX's statement about the 'rattle he can hear until he pushes in his clutch'.
FX, that is NORMAL! It is caused by 5th gear being mounted on the input shaft of the transaxle or something like that. Porsche performed many fixes for it when the 944 was a young car but realized that it was simply an aspect of the design and was not a mechanical problem. Most 944's make this same noise. I bet your car doesn't make this noise until it has been driven a little bit to get everything within normal temp range. My car doesn't.
The reason the noise sounds like it is coming from your bellhousing is because it is transmitted up the torque tube and the bellhousing acts kind of like a mega phone and amplifies the noise.

Yup, I agree...belt spray is exactly that...Your better off to urinate on your belts...
I concur with the others...Get a compression and leakdown test...That will tell you whether you need to consider a rebuild...A rebuild should not be taken lightly as it's expensive and time comsuming...Just ask me how I know...
Besides, If it's not broken, don't fix it...

Well I found out today what the noise was. I'm sixty miles from home at the Target store in Farmington. I notice that the noise has gotten a little louder. All of a sudden i notice the smell of coolant and see my temp needle go a little above the first slash. I am alarmed because in the five years I've owned the car it has never ever gone even once over the first slash mark. I park the car and turn it off. WOW, a gush of green coming from the waterpump is literally pouring onto the parking lot deck. Well, I got this pump changed last year when I had the belts done so I'm guessing it's a faulty pump from that crap place Vertex Auto. I don't know where to go from here. I had to start the car to put it on the flat bed and tow it sixty miles home. Would starting with the water pump shot cause problems. Forgive any stupid questions. And keith yes I have asked that before, but I have since had my clutch replaced and the noise was still there so I was wondering if there were any new updates to the mysterious noise. So don't go poking me right now I'm having a very bad day. Anyway, at least the noise went away....... <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" />

Sorry to hear about your w-pump... Cranking the engine is the WORST possible thing you could do now.
You're lucky your belt held up, and your pistons didn't meet your valves... Then, it would be 100X worse.

Hey - no poking intended, and no, just starting the car to pull it onto a flatbed, after it has cooled, provided the pump still turns, will not cause a problem.
You did the right thing by shutting it down so soon. I can't believe the number of folks who "try to make the next exit"...
About the trans noise thing, my comment was directed toward Max (in explanation) who thought the rest of us missed something.
BTW, you're having a good luck kind of day - a waterpump/belt job is MUCH cheaper than a rebuild!

Thanks Keith. Hopefully I did not destroy anything turning it over. But I'll have to do it again to get it on the flatbed to go to the shop. Ouch!!! There is no were to really put a tow hook this damn thing is so low.

Don't worry...Keith was poking me for my comment to the board about your rattling noise question (sorry Keith). As for tow hooks, if you look at the front bumper you will see a little black rectangle in the middle of the air intake opening. If you twist that piece of plastic clockwise and pull out it will come off exposing a threaded hole. This is where your Porsche Factory Tow hook goes. This is the only place that I know of to safely mount a tow hook on the vehicle. Evidently you don't have the towing eye in your tool kit. They can be purchased from most dismantlers or ebay for $5-$10.

Probably. But a little silicone spray is a _great_ diagnostic tool for finding belt noises... it's just not a cure. The noise will come back, if you don't replace the belts. And it won't hurt a good belt, AFAIK.
