Thank you for that.
Very good read and I now know more about the 924/ 944 than previously.

although with its awkward racing-style shift pattern (first gear down and to the left)
why is first being down and left racing-style? any good reason? but it's a good read. thanks

1st gear is for starting off; in racing the 2 - 3 shift is much more useful to have in a straight line. Here's an interesting read from another source:

@944Ross
What is the source of the excerpt? Thanks very much for sharing...

I have the Getrag style setup in three of my cars (the 928 and two 931s), and will be putting it into at least one more of them (eventually). I really love it. Part of the endearing, unique character of the early 80s 924s and 928s.

I'll have to check; I think it's from a coffee-table book I have on sports cars.

Thanks. I read through it and it seems like a fairly objective assessment of things. I certainly agree with the author's point about the Cayenne and the fate of WW....

Found it; it's in the introduction from "The Complete Book of Sports Cars" by Bill Reynolds. He also has a short commentary on the rise/fall of sports cars in each period from the '50's thru the present, and mentions only the 924 (not favorably), not a word about the 944.
