Default Front strut cartridge or complete strut assembly?

Hello,
How can I tell if my 1987 944 NA uses a replacement cartridge type front strut or needs complete strut assembly? I want want to replace the original shocks but I'm not sure of what I have.
Thanks,

If it's an 87 NA, almost definitely needs a complete strut assembly.

On the 86 and earlier NA cars, you can see threads on the strut housing just below the strut cap.

Or you can install adjustable koni's which is a modified strut
housing with koni insert.

OP could also get the Koni inserts and perform the Hacksaw strut mod... Paragon has them...http://www.paragon-products.com/prod...-1414s-xdo.htm

Okay, I was afraid of that. Any recommendations for street use only? KYB? Sach? Bilstein?
Thanks

I think this will be your best bet, as far as KYB is concern keep away from them ,not saying there no good just that you get what you pay for & pretty sure you won't be satisfy with them even for street use .I've use Boge sport all around on my 83-944 for years & can't beat them for a decent price street shock.Another option you mitgh have is try to find a good set of konis Struts from somebody parting a car , and don't forget " shocks -springs -wheels & tires" are all related to each other.Good luck.
