Default Clunk/Thunk from front drivers side suspension

Hi all,

I've done a thorough search of the forums on this and gotten a lot of good ideas, but I thought I'd also post a few particulars here on my car to see if it gives anyone other ideas.

I get a significant "clunk" or "thunk" when going over bumps. It comes from the front drivers side.

Mileage 85,000

Car was modified as followed and has run that way for years.
200# lowering springs
Koni Yellows
Weltmeister sways
18 inch wheels (now downgraded to 17")

Caster blocks were just recently replaced so we can rule that out. I don't think the noise changed in character after this.

There was a major dose of brake fluid thrown around the front when a hose let go a couple of years ago.

Reading other posts, it seems like it could be a number of things;
Upper strut mount
Struts
Loose nut on upper strut
Ball joints
Sway bar bushings (likely thrashed by brake or PS fluid)
Tie rod ends

I've else read about various tests (grab wheel by 9 and 3, 12 and 6) etc.

However, given my cars set up and history anyone have any particular ideas they think warrant checking first?

Best,

Phil

Hi Phil,

My bet is the lower control arm ball joint. Have you checked it out?

Hi krystar, You beat me. Phil, have you ever had your car up on jack stands to look under your car for any reason it might be making the clunk/thunk noise? You have to look these cars over good and bend a wrench every now and then. By lowering the car you put extra stress on the ball joints, results in early failure and needs rebuilt.

Cheers,
Larry

Seems to be related to the sway bar. We disconnected one side and the noise is gone. More when I have it...
