Searching the archives for info on changing out the dash clock light (link to Paragon Tech Board if you are looking for it).
One of the posts mentioned this underhood merc switch. Anyone know anything about it? When is the underhood light supposed to work? HOw to turn on? Or does it turn on automatically when the hood is raised when the headlights are on? Anyone know? Price/Difficulty/Location of this mercury switch? First I've ever heard of it.
P.S. My windshield squirters don't work either and seemto have electrical connections running to them! WTF?

The underhood light will only turn on if the lights (well at least the running lights) are on and the hood is up. I don't know for sure but I would guess wiring to the windshield squirters are to heat the jet. The jets were clogged with wax on mine (well one was) and I blew it out w/ compressed air.

the windsheild washer nozzles are heated on all our cars. compressed air works well to clean them. you may want to take the hose off and blow backwards through them to get some of the junk out. also running lights have to be on at least for the under hood light to come on, as JLeake said. check the bulb, since its exposed to the elements it may have corroded a bit, so the connection could be dirty.

With the hood open the light is on the bottom side of the hood just above the master cylinder and the mercury switch is in the light assembly.
I got one at Zim's for about $15, before I knew that the lights had to be on in order for it to work. It's really a lot brighter than I expected it to be.

IIRC the light will also turn on with the driving lights off if you turn one of the signal lights on, can't remember which one.
what I didn't know was that it had a mercury switch and all this time I was looking for a regular switch all over the engine bay <img border="0" alt="[ouch]" title="" src="graemlins/c.gif" />

Thanks guys. Sorry it took so long to respond. I'll see if the underhood light works tonight - I doubt it. I also doubt the squirters will work, but we'll see. If not? Another post!
