Bad news, just test fitted the rings inside the cylinders and the compression rings all came out .05mm to .15mm greater then spec. Given that it's a gap 50% larger then the specified range I'm worried about too much blow by. When I gapped the old rings they came out within spec so I was expecting the new rings to come out fine, but when the machine shop prepped the walls they may have taken out too much to stay within spec. On top of that, I spotted a burr in one of the pistons above the oil ring landing where it almost looks like the ring tried to pop out of its groove and pushed up the metal. =/

EDIT: ok, maybe I got a bad set of goetze rings. I just test fit a couple of my old compression rings and they are within spec.

Well, after spending a month dealing with piston ring issues and carelessly nicking a rod bearing journal I've made progress on the rebuild. I'm hoping to have the engine together by the end of the week.

maybe, depends on the work schedule.

I just tightened down the oil pan and it came out fairly straight but there is a bit of a bulge at one corner. Not sure if it's bad enough to loosen it all up and try again.

good to hear, just the head, cams and a bunch of small stuff left!

Took me a while to figure out how to get a torque wrench on the two oil pan bolts hidden under the oil level sender, but I figured out that I could put my 10mm combination wrench on the end of my torque wrench and do a little math to get the proper torque.

Well I started the head installation but I've noticed a difference from when the head came off. It looks like the new head studs are shorter or deeper into the block, the nuts don't seem to seat as far. This is with 15 ft-lbs of torque, I haven't done the 60 or 90 degrees? Should I be concerned?

I ended up pulling the head studs out and resetting them at the proper height, looks like the shop bottomed them out when they shouldn't have. Head is now secure, and I should have the whole thing ready to go in the next few days

Do you hold the clutch pedal down for a long time at lights/stop signs? That will cause wear on the thrust bearing. The PO may have done it instead of you.

My 951 had the same issue, but much worse damage on the crank and thrust bearing.
