Bernie,
As far as I know, shouldn't be a problem as 16" flatdish wheels were an option on 944's as well (and 931's I believe.)

Yes they will fit.
In the picture link above(AtLimeRock.jpg), car #167 is an '87 951. (I'm #142 with the 968 wheels!)
A friend of mine, Phil, has an '88 944S with the 'trash can lid' wheels.
Seeing that you're car is an '86, you should have the correct offset, and should be able to run up to 245/40 16's on those wheels.
My understanding is that those wheels are dirt cheap. (Anyone have a pair to sell?!)

The 944 changed offset when ABS was added for the 1987 MY, your (soon to be) '86 will need a 23.3 mm offset. This is the same offset that the 911 used until '89. The flat disk wheels that were used on the 944 were 52 mm offset, and were available on the '87-'88 cars IIRC. I have no idea what offset the wheels used on the 931 were, I am also not familiar with 928 offsets so there may be "early offset" flat disk wheels out there. Your wheels should be marked (below the width and diameter) what offset they are.
Early cars can use later wheels by using spacers and longer studs.

Hey Dave,
Nice to see you again......hehehehe
I want to put the dish wheels from my 928S on the 944 to dump the phone dials it currently has. 928 is getting 18" 5-spokes.
I will check my data on offsets to verify that it can be done.
BTW - ebay usually has flatdisc wheels there. Do a Porsche 928 search to find them.
Good Luck
Bernie

What size condition are your Phone dials?
Will they fit my 84'944?
Are you going to Autofest in Ventura?
I think you know where this is going.
