Post What's your parallel parking technique with big rims?

I live in the city and need to parallel park now and then. I recently put 17" C2T wheels on my 951 and after a few close calls, I'm paranoid about scratching my rims.

The other day, I saw a fellow parallel parking a 996 C2 with the passenger side toward the sidewalk and noticed that he backed into the space at larger angle with the sidewalk than normal to feel the curb first, then pulled out out of the space again, and narrowed the angle to get the car closer to the sidewalk without touching it with his rims.

Does anyone here do this and/or how do you parallel park without scratching your rims?

TIA

I don't have 17's or a specific parralel parking technique, but when ever there is a tight spot I use the mirror control to lower my view angle down on the passengers side so I can see what I'm doing.

Just don't use the "braille" method!

Seriously, I just take my time, even if I have to get out and look. Sounds more like the guy with the 996 C2 just backed in wrong the first time. Practice, practice, practice is the only way I know, and Roberto's idea of using the mirror control is also a great idea, until you get used to your car.

I do it like Roberto with the passenger rear view mirror. I dont have to adjust it thought, because it is broken and it always facing the ground. I never use it anyways so its just like a permanent parking mirror.

Thanks for the mirror tip. I ought to try that, although I dislike readjusting my mirrors.

OT: On Citroen XM the mirror is automatically pointed downwards when you put the stick in reverse. I haven't seen it on other cars.

Practice. I'm only 22 and I can parralel park a Hummer on either side of a one-way street.

Using the mirrors is a smart thing to do if you lack practice. It only takes 2 seconds to adjust the mirrors. It takes a day to earn enough $$ to replace a ****ed up rim.

the m5 mirrors move down when you go into reverse, its pretty annoying when you are going forward and backward to position a car in the shop and there are things moving all around you <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

my rule of thumb when parking is "be paranoid as hell and don't scratch your rims".. i usually end up parked a lil farther from the curb than i need to be but it keeps my wheels lookin nice.

You could always install a nice set of curb feelers!!
