![Question](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
Probably a newbie question, but I'm new to Porsches, much less my 951....
I'm going to yank the engine out of my car this evening (long story, only driven it 3 or 4 times). The head is off, as is just about everything else, save the oil and water pumps. I see a lifting ring towards the front driver's side of the engine, on the alternator/AC compressor bracket (the large aluminum one), but can't find one towards the rear of the engine.
Is there a factory lifting point on the back of engine, or do I need to improvise? If so, what's the best place so that the engine is relatively balanced?
Thanks for all the help!

Well since you have the cam cover off already, you could use a couple of the larger bolts, say around the bell housing area to bolt a chain to and use that as a lifting point. Just be careful and check to make sure the chain doesn't crush, rub or break anything. Also make sure you choose bolts that are strong enough and threaded in far enough.
Good luck!

I am not sure of the procedure, but all of the 944/951 engines that I have observed for an R&R were done from underneath. This is suppose to be much easier than lifting them out.

The head was already off the car when I started working on it myself, so I never got a real good look at it all together.
The service manuals and procedures say to pull the engine from the bottom, but you still need the lifting points to drop it. I'm pulling it from the top, because there's nothing left to obstruct it from coming out, and I don't want to pull the steering/suspension/cross member off too. Getting 21" of clearance is a pain too.
Going in may be a different story though.
Thanks for the help!
