Post $1000 for Suspension

got a grand set aside for improvements to the '87 944 NA, SO, anyone got a list of ideas in some sort of order based on priority (what i mean is a hierarchy or proper order to get these mods/upgrades)

i really am not sure what order to get anything and how far to go on this.

danke

Ohhh. . . money to spend, let me help (in order of importance and "bang for the buck"!

• 944 Turbo S (27mm) ft. sway bar off ebay ($100 shipped).
• 944 Turbo (18 mm) rear bar off ebay ($60 shipped).
• "hacksaw" Koni yellow front strut upgrade from Paragon($308/pr).
• Koni yellow rear shocks / adjustable - Paragon ($232/pr)
• Ground control front coil-over kit w/ 250 lb springs from, you guessed it, Paragon ($240)
• shipping from Texas = aprox $50.

grand total, $990.00.

If you have any left over, buy yourself an autox day or two at your local PCA.

Little adjustment...

944 turbo sway isn't 18mm, the Turbo S sway is 18mm and the early 89 turbo sway is 18mm. The late 89 turbo sway is 16mm.

Also if you're doing the labor yourself you could probably pick up a Turbo S Torsion bar for cheap and install that as well...and do a simple weltmeister 250lbs spring up front without the coil over kit.

The order of things to do sounds good to me! sways, shocks, springs/T-bars.

What about the rear end?? You will also need some new torsion bars..about $250 I went with 28mm and that is what I would suggest going with...

another interesting question to the people who have actually done this mods/upgrades, what difference does it make/how does it compare before and after?

don't forget new bushings, especially with the bigger sway bars. i also had to purchase the drop links for my rear sway bar (my car was sans rear bar in stock form). i picked the drop links up for $20 from oklahoma foreign - just down the road from me.

some of those prices are optimistic, but generally good. have fun!

Weltmesiter springs are an option. For the price difference, you get height adjustability. Real nice for weight distribution. I like it for winter/summer ride height changes.

It's easy to go overbudget, isn't it?

I have Turbo-S Torsion bars and springs laying in my attic. You make an offer, I'll dump 'em.

Mark, he (944 Terminator) can use the T-bars but not the springs - he'd need your struts too, but I bet you still want those

Skip, If I have a source for some used Koni Yellows and I were to buy Mark's Turbo S T bars & springs - would they fit on my otherwise stock '87 NA? Also, I have no rear sway bar (I bought a used stock NA bar but never installed it). But I might be able to buy used bars from the same guy with the Koni's. What would you recommend size wise? Also, do you know the difference in the spring rate from the '87 NA to the '88 Turbo S ones? Last, seat of the pants feel - big or "BIG" diff in daily driving?

remember, if you change the springs you will probably be in a modified class at scca functions, and some pca functions.

Any rear sway is way better than none - the size you get from a Turbo car will likely be 26.8mm front and 16mm or 18mm rear - they're a great upgrade if you're not ready to dump the cash for 30/19 bars or other similar.

AFAIK, normal are 140 lbs/in, TurboS are 160 lbs/in.

quote:
Last, seat of the pants feel - big or "BIG" diff in daily driving?

Depends on what you're wearing... Not much diff between the 140# to 160# - that change was to coincide with the T-bar upgrade to 25.5mm (from 23.5 and 24.5). IMHO, biggest diff will be in the Koni upgrade - then sways, then springs.

If you get good used Konis that are not the TurboS, then you have the option of 200 or 250# welts, or the adjustable ride-height kit (with choice of spring rate).

Good Luck!

Check out the 924/944/951…Parts for sale in the classifieds. I have my original sway bar from my turbo that I changed out about 9 months ago. Never tracked. I changed to a 968 30mm sway bar. Here is the list of stuff for sale. I did not narrow it down I just posted it all. Everything is Stock off of my 86 944 Turbo. Had 91K original highway miles on it before the change. If you do not like what I have, there is always stuff there. I have this listed for the next twenty three days and then I am putting them on ebay. Anyhow, send a private message if you are interested. Glad to see you are taking care of your suspension. It will make an incredible difference. The upgrades for my car sure did make it handle better. Good luck.

Stock Torsion Bars 75
Stock Turbo Front Sway Bar 75
Stock Turbo Head Gasket 30
