Post Groaning after rebuilding rack..

This week I rebuilt my PS rack and replaced the tie rods. Finally backed the car outside to bleed and put new fluid in.. turning the wheel left to right until the level stabilizes and any air bubbles dissappear. Well the level stabilized, the air bubbles are gone .. but I still get a groaning noise from the pump. I know for a fact the pump is not bad because, when it had fluid in it, it was working fine before I rebuilt the rack.

Do I need to give it more time, or am I doing something wrong??

The rack should bleed out fairly quickly. If you still get a notable "groaning" from the pump you may want to check a few other things. Tighten all your connections. A small leak on one of the copper washers for the high pressure lines coming from the pump to the rack could let air leak in but no fluid leak out. Also check the return line going to the reservoir. That hose is known to get holes in it. That spisific hose is so bad that Porsche even made an updated one for later model 944's.

Are you using ATF or the synthetic PS fluid? I have found that the synthetics tend to take longer to bleed out than the ATF.

Will double check the return line.. I think I might have an issue with one of the copper washers. I'll keep you updated :-)

The pump groan is only caused by air leaking back through the pump. Find the leak and you fix the problem... easier said than done in some cases.
