Default Restoring/Building a 944 Rothmans Challenge Car

Hello 944 Fans,

We are finally making progress with restoring and building my 944 Rothmans Challenge car, and so I thought that I would share some progress pics. Although this car is being built by Fordahl Motorsports to be eligible in the popular 944 Cup series, we are staying true as much as we can to the way these Rothmans Challenge (Cup option) cars were raced in the 80's.

I hope to get more pics up at some point. Meanwhile, if you have any insights on how such cars were raced and built back in their period, please feel free to share.

I have more pics but they are too large at the moment. I'll have to work on them later. Meanwhile, the following two photos are: when I first bought the car and when I need inspiration in pushing through with the project...

On the 944th day there was approval for.......boost.

For me it all began with the 924. Historially interesting stuff to many. You must be stoked!

Goodluck.

Regards,

Awesome project and in good hands with Greg F.

Even more awesome that I will get to see it up close and personal in PacNW 944 Cup! I have thought about doing Rothmans type blue side bars on my red car too. But that thing deserves them!

I look forward to meeting you on track next year! Until then, keep posting the pics!

Do you know what the car number or livery of that car was back in the 80's?

#22 sponsored by Heimrath Porsche in Toronto. Driven by Matthewson in 1986 then by Surma in 1987.

Sweet. Looking forward to seeing it in Portland if you're gonna race with the rest of the '44 Cup guys from Seattle.

Ah, too bad. I was hoping I had some photos for you. I just looked through my photos from the Niagara Falls 1988 race and no luck. There were a bunch of cars sponsored by Heimrath, but no #22, Matthewson, or Surma.

Thanks for all the encouragements.

shiners780,

In 1988, the car raced in the Firehawk endurance races (BEMC in September and May, President's Trophy in July, some GP in June, and the SCCA Nationals). I'm not sure which one is the Niagara Falls race. My source is the original CASC logbook for this car.

All the best with the project. It's going to be fantastic when you finish. Just don't make us wait too long! Out of curiosity, what wheels do you have on the car, they look great.

Funny, I was cruising around the other day thinking how cool it would be to make a Boss replicar. You're doing something very cool with that 944!

I just realized the 1988 Niagara Falls race was the Rothmans Porshe Turbo Cup, so your car wouldn't have been there.

That is an exciting project you are undertaking, good luck!
