Is it true that on a 951 S, when you replace the battery (that has gone dead on the car already) with a new one, the "!" light on the dashboard comes on, necessitating reset of a relay?

Yes, frequently happens. Look for airbag warning light reset procedure in archives. Or in 944 Garage if that is back up and running. Just get some long wires and a watch with second hand and you can do it after a couple tries as you will no doubt foul up the first 2.
