Default Engine Cost?

Can anyone tell me what an engine for an '85.1 costs?

$500 bux or less. Craigslist is your friend. XSboost just picked one up for the dragon that set him back $350 I believe and even came with a new clutch disc.

$250 to $1000 for running motors or ones that need rebuild. These are "junkyard" motors however. Now a fully rebuilt one will cost $2000-$2500. Cearly most of this is labor to teardown and rebuilt.

Also any 85.5-87 motor is a simple drop in. 88 motor drop in, but are valued for their pistons. 83-85 motors fit as well, but you will need to pay attetion to the fuel injecition as there are some minor, but important changes. However it is easy to put a 83 motor in an 85.5+ chassis.

What is so special about the '88 944 N/A motor?

I know in the 924S, the 87 and 88's had different compression. It was my understanding that for the 924S, the change for '88 was made to streamline engine production.. so they grabbed the 944 motor which already had the higher compression.. Clarks-Garage also lists, under "technical information" that the '87-88 944 motors are the same.

That said, a motor from a 924S would also work for the OP, no?

88NA has higher compression pistons.

Any 2.5 would work from any year NA or 924S.

I bought my spare for $250, but it needed a rebuild that cost a couple grand.

That info is flat out WRONG.

All US spec cars from 83-87 (even the 924S) had 9.5:1 pistons.
in 1988 they all used the same world spec 944 motor at 10.2:1.

The reason for is from 82-87 the 944 had 10.6:1 compression for europe. In 88 ald cars got 10.2:1 pistons.

The 86 and 87 924S in all markets came with 9.5:1 compression. In 88 they all came with 10.2:1 motors.

The 924S motor will fit in a 944. I have many 924S parts in my 84 944 spec car since I was able to get two 924S as parts cars.
