I thought they came with a clutch switch???

I've hit the ref limiter plenty of times , been 5 years since I've done any engine work. Who knows if its going to blow someday.

A few times (3-5) I spun it to a little over 7,200 rpm due to wheelspin in 1st or 2nd

Power does get sparse but I have run mine to 7K numerous times on the track.

You should already have one.....but, even if you don't, you still (should) have a rev limiter. I have no problem bouncing mine off of that, with no ill effects. Its there for a reason.

After 20years the rods have fatigued. The stock pistons are not exactly light either...
Anything over 7k is tempting fate with the stock bottom end...

I have hit the rev limiter several times on the track while accelerating hard on pit-out.

Not something I like to do, or do on purpose...but that's what the limiter is there for.

That said, I normally try to shift around 6k max.

I know I've bounced off the rev limiter with my stock chip but on the whole I tend to not go above the mid-6k's.

140k miles on my stock 83. First race, with the only engine prep being running 20/50 VR1 I did a 3-hour enduro. Lots of running at 6400. No problems. That is a Porsche.

Yup. That's what happened to me the only time I saw the red line. It had been a long, hard day, cruising home, and noticed the CASIS light on. Stepped on clutch to go to 5th...

Sure sounded great but scarred the crap out of me. Just tapped the brake.

Interesting. The factory definitely put one in there on my '87. I'm pretty sure that all years have a switch to disengage cruise if you step on the clutch. It would have been nice if they also rigged it to the starter -- I'll certainly admit to having turned the key while the car is in gear a couple of times. Harmless, but alarming.

Well with my increased readline (8300rpms) before anyone starts barking I have loads of internals done. Even with that said I hardly ever get it up that high only on dyno pulls. I mostly shift at 6k I like my build/money/time invested to last.

Now here is a better question, How far can a reworked 944 rotating assembly and valve train go? Has anyone broken 10k and had the car last?

I seriously doubt 10k on a 8V head at least.

Rogue I am using the 8V head bigger valves, ported, polished, stiffer springs and solid lifters five angle valve grind. Each port was enlarged by 3mm (there a bouts) to increase the flow as well as the throttle body and stock intake was also enlarged to handle the flow. Before I change to an EMS I was using a chipset for SUPERCHIPS that could handle the increase in revs and bumped up my redline.
But when you increase your revs there is major work all around the motor to "adjust " the recirculating mass to help in your favor.
