tuneups... don't be a jackass
Okay, so my car recently failed emmisions. I was kindof upset because my cat, valve-stem seals, and O2 sensor were all exactly 2 years old (from the last time I had to get my car tested).
So I decided that I should replace the following:
Of corse I needed to repace the intake manifold gaskets to get to the vaccum hoses. Since I had the intake manifold off I also decided to replace the idle control valve and the throttle position switch. I also cleaned the throttle body and every electrical contact I removed (TPS, ICV, etc).
A few notes: You should REALLY replace your air filter every 6,000 miles. I had somehow gotten another number stuck in my head (hence the name of the post).
Just as a reminder, here are the most important tune up items and related mileage:
3,000 miles:
oil change
6,000 miles:
air filter
12,000 miles:
fuel filter
inspect cap+rotor+wires
spark plugs
24,000 miles:
brake fluid
36,000 miles:
transmission fluid
my car now runs much better and is noticably faster
So I decided that I should replace the following:
- cap
- rotor
- plug wires
- plugs
- fuel filter
- air filter
- vaccum hoses

I think my broken (completley snapped in two) spark plug wire end was the cause. No, I am not completely unobservent, the PO did a so-so job of electrical taping it and covering the electrical tape with the boot. I was very close to passing, this should put me over. I will see tomorrow.

You know I have wondered about the coil myself of late. Are these suckers a "wear item"? I'm sure I have the original in my car. Replacements run about $40...but then some of the aftermarket coils that claim increased performance seem to be pretty close in price. Anyone have experience with this? Is it worth using one of the aftermarket coils in an NA or should I just buy a replacement?

oh yeah, coils can go bad. one one my 928 was shot, 110k miles. the one on my jetta went at 40k. there's a test procedure in the shop manuals.
i'm not into the aftermarket ignition parts so i just buy the factory pieces...
