Post 944 s2 transmission

Well I have owned the car since new and have had only the best experience with it. The problem 2K miles ago was the clutch witch I replaced from the stupid ruber to the new sachs clutch. But now I have a new issue that seems to be kinda mysterious. I was going through the gears (accelerating) and when I hit 3rd I noticed a noise that I had never heard before. The noise seemed to be coming from the transmission. (high pitch but changed and got louder(when I pushed gas down) almost sounded like a squealing belt but from the rear. I drove it directly home (about 3 miles away) and down shifted into 3rd then to Neutral to make a left hand turn. I went to push it into 1st and it wouldn't go. then I was like ok this happens I am just not stopped its being stubborn I go to put it into 2nd. and also no movement into 1st or 2nd (at this time I had cars behind me and was on the other side of road) and I decided to drop it in 3rd (burning clutch) to get of the middle of a busy road and kept it in 3rd(I I doubled clutched it so the burning stopped I was sad) for another 500 ft un till I parked into my garage. Were I turned car off and was able to put it in 1st and 2nd . then turned car on and 1st and 2nd worked so I pulled out of garage and 1st and 2nd continued to work but were slightly(more like just scratching) grinding as in when switching gears when I got them into the gears they were fine the gears seemed fine. I decided better be safe then sorry and put it back in so I never got to figure out if the sound that occured in 3rd had came back. I decided to look at the oil in the transmission to look for metal. I drained the oil and used a magnet to get every little piece of metal out. I came back with very little metal (normal wear). So at this point I was kind of relived and decided more then likely the linkage came loose or maybe the oil was bad oil.(since it was this costal stuff 80w/90 hypoid Gl 4 approved that was really cheap I looked at the bottle and in small print it said " top off only use on Limited Slip" So I figured I have LSD this might be the issue. So I decided to order some redline full synthetic 75w/90 that was Gl 4 approved (the only Gl 4 synthetic) I was told good things about this oil and how it can sometimes cure transmission problems on the supra's and volvo transmissions. I am right now waiting for the oil to arive and when It does I plan on testing it and if that doesnt work then I guess the transmission will be torn down. (of course after I inspect the linkage) Is there anythink else it might be? or any 944 transmission traits that I might be dealing with?

the ring and pinion went out on my transmission but I never got scratching gears, the right rear tire would spin actually burning rubber while turning on just a tap of gas! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

It may be a ring and pinion. Keep in mind also that Porsche installed magnets in the transmission cases to pull any large chunks of metal away from the moving gears in case something broke in order to prevent any further damage

I don't think gear oil may help nurse the tranny back to health, but there maybe synchros worn severely or your limited slip differential is going out. I hope everything works out ok with the least amount of $$$ you have to spend. Good Luck my friend.

Fishey: EEK! That's the longest 'run-on' paragraph I've ever read! It's making my head spin!

There are different tranny fluids for LSD vs. an open diff. How long were you using the current tranny fluid? I doubt using the 'wrong' tranny fluid for a short time would cause any long term damage.

Just my $0.42.

Why is it I can never put everything in one post? I dunno anyways I thought the magnets would be placed on the oil plugs. I actually think its something minnor because even though it wouldn't go into 1st or 2nd 3,4,5, were still plenty good so I think the problem lies in only 2nd gear because since day 1 first gear hasn't been abig fan of the downshifts. or a being put in when rolling. The problem I think lies in the linkage as a matter of fact as I recall on my car it was held on with a bolt and wire? that doesnt seem to good anyways I am going to prolly rebuild the transmission if I cant find an easy solution.

Ring and Pinion (Pinions are 90degree joints going out the the wheels?) if this is true that would explain the accessive play in the wheels when on jackstands (for instance I spin one and there is play before it grabs the other) I thought it was the CV joints but I rebuilt them so ring and pinion how hard is this to fix? we looking at something harder then the clutch to put in? (note wasnt hard just time consummeing)
