I need a BJ!
So I got my car up on the lift to fix the grounded starter wire, and lo and behold, I need a ball joint!
So someone give me the info on the replace-it-yourself kit, will you?
Also discovered I need motormounts (my aftermarket ones are SHOT after less than a year), getting near front break time, and that !@#$%! cork camhousing gasket has decided to give up the ghost and has soiled my pretty block.
Ah well, I suppose that after I replace the motormounts again, my Fuel Pressure gauge will start hitting the hood...
Anyway, who had the 411 on the ball joints (BJs)?

Are you sure about those bolt on ball joints? My 86 951 has late model arms not steel like the early 944s. I thought that all late model A-arms had to be rebuilt. If not than I can go to Autozone and pick the ball joints up?

I'm in the process of converting my '86 951 to the old style steel arms with replaceable bolt-in ball joints. I'll probably have it done some time this week...'86 is the only year turbo you can do this without changing out a bunch of parts. Danno is the one with the info for the DIY press-in ball joints for the aluminum arms.

Yeah, I had two BJs in one day. Almost too much to handle.
Danno's Webpage has his write-up of the procedure. Look in the repair section. Large C-clamps will work as well as a vise and are easier to handle.

Yep, I 've got the 89 front suspension, with the larger balljoints, so no PepBoys balljoints for me.
BTW, you have to convert to steel arms (like Ribs said) to get the replaceable joints on an '86.

How do you know you've got worn ball joints? I suspect I have a BJ problem, but I got the front wheels off the ground and shook the **** out of everything, and it seemed pretty solid...Someone mentioned putting a jack lightly right underneath the joint to take pressure off and then wiggle it...

If you have the whee;s on the air, try wiggling the bottom back and forth, while someone looks at the ball joint for play - mine had about 1/2"!
You can also squeeze the ball joint and spindle with a large pair of channel locks to detect smaller amounts of play...

I had a ball joint "GO" on my 86. The ball joint stayed attached to the spindle/strut and broke out of the top of the controll arm leaving the left tire to turn free at gods will. That was a mess to keep ahold of untill I couold get stoped. Any way I converted to the 87 controll arms and longer tie rods on the rack. It was quite a chore to do and I ended up with a tire/rim problem when I was done. I have droped springs on the front and with the longer 87 arms it pushed the tires out an inch which made them touch the rim of the fender. The only options I had were to get diffrnet rims with a shallow offset to bring the tires back in or buy spring spaceers. I went with the spring spacers for now, which bring the car back up to stock and give me a temp fix for my rubbing problem. I am deciding on changing to steel arms (shorter)or finding some diffrent offset rims.
I just wanted to show that a 86 to 87 a arm change can be done if you want to but there are a few things involved one might not think about untill he's already deep into it like me.

Nope, that's about what I pay for a BJ.

I'm sorry, that's what I thought it was all about. Maybe I should get my money back?
Couldn't resist .
