If your water is hard,a cup of white vinegar added to the flush water will help remove the crud. Also, there are commercially available flushes that are safe for aluminum engine components. If you use the flush that requires running the engine, do not remove the thermostat.

my wrench uses the detergent on my porsche and the diesel trucks with external oil coolers he works on by day.
the local dealership asked my wrench what he uses on the job because he couldnt believe laundry detergent was the deal.
flush the system with water, when filled with water add just one cup, drive for about 100 miles, and check out the oil in the overflow tank. flush with water again, and enjoy having the cleanest smelling radiator for the day.
