Considering an '87 944S
With the death of my '87 944, I've been looking for a replacement. I've run across an '87 944S that sounds pretty good, but I wanted to get a few opinions first.
The car has had a recent valvejob, rebuilt tranny, new clutch. The work was done by Porsche and even comes with a warrenty. The car has the sport package. Its white with white leather interior. Milage is higher than I would want, at 160k, but with some of the recent work sounds decent.
On Wednesday I am taking a look. I know, well knew, my regular 944 very well. Is there anything in particular on an "s" model that I should pay particular attention too?
I am stil dealing with the insurance company on the payout of my '87 944. Just waiting them out at this point.
Thanks for the help.

Sounds like a cool car--cept for the milage. I would think that unless you are getting a super price on the car, 160k is too high. Sure our engines can go for 200k, but at 160k, you would hit the 200k mark pretty quickly.
So, unless you plan on getting another car in 2-3 years, I would go for a lower-milage version of the car!
That's just me though...

Uh oh, here we go again! Seriously, do a search for 944S and you will read a lot of information on this particular model.

A lot of people bad mount the 's', but I say don't listen to those nay-sayers. I think for the right price I would pick up this car. You may need bottom end rebuild come 200k, but you may not. A few people have gotten 300k out of the original bottom end.

I've got 170K on my S with no oil usage on 3000mile oil changes and a 7% leakdown. I think that maintained properly they are good for more than 200K.
I paid $4000 for mine with 155K on it.

These two look like cars I would be all over, if I didn't have my N/A!

I have a 1987-944S and I am approaching 142,000 miles and she runs great! The only major expense I have incured is replacing the clutch, everything else is normal maint. items for any car with this mileage. If the car has had the items replaced that you stated by Porsche I would be confident in the car. However it is a good idea to have a PPI done just so you know what you are getting.I purchased my car from a private party aprox. 2 years ago with about 131,000 miles and paid $5000.00.Hope this helps. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
