Post O/T: V-8-powered successor to Porsche’s legendary 928

Anybody seen this?

A V-8-powered successor to Porsche’s legendary 928 could be on sale by 2004 or 2005.

The front engine coupé that Porsche board members are currently considering, part of the Project E2, is said to be Wendelin Wiedeking’s favorite to broaden the make’s lineup.

The new two-door four-seater is thought to be a direct rival to the Aston Martin Vanquish, Ferrari F550 and Mercedes CL, with prices kept high and output low. To keep development costs low, the new coupé will share engine, gearbox, rear axle and air suspension with the Cayenne. The V-8 is expected to put out almost 450 hp with its twin turbochargers.

In addition to this stylish 2+2, there is another proposal on the drawing board for a four-door, all-wheel-drive hatchback that would comfortably seat four adults.

Sources tell us the final decision whether or not to build the four-seater will be officially announced by Wendelin Wiedeking at the Frankfurt Motor Show this coming September. Whichever vehicle in the Project E2 books make it to production, it will likely be built in Leipzig.

It'll tank for the same reasons as the original: It's ugly as sin.

As far as I'm concerned I'm gonna start saving my pennies now so I can be ready when it comes out!

Great Autoweek link - thanks O-sterm!

If I ignore the Barney purple color, I can see the styling has much more potential than at first glance - seems to be just an evolution of the 996 design.

Either way, it'll be out of the price range of most of us on the water cooler boards....

Tank? A high-price, high-performance GT with a run of almost 20 years tanked?

That's an odd comment - I found the 928 very attractive, and the fact that it lasted from the late 70s (?) to 94 wouldn't... I wouldn't exactly say it "tanked."

Hope they go through with this - will be sweet.

928 sales were very strong until the late 80's. They had 10 years of strong sales and only 3 years of "bad" sales.

Thumbs up

Nice, it has 996 evolution combined with Porsche GT and Ferrari Maranello. All into a German built car that should be able to deal with daily usage without major problems or extremely high maintenance costs as the Ferrari... …what is not to like?

That's what I'm talkin' about - yeah! Give me THAT 4 banger in my '44 (turbo'd of course).

Dang that would be a sweet car. Of course, Boxster sales would "tank" so a 924/944/968 comeback/successor will never happen.

I wish they would build more affordable models, we hardly need another million dollar supercar.
Bring back a front engine turbo 4 cylinder model

Ummm 420HP from a twin turbocharged V-8.....yawn!

Not to rain on Porsche's parade but the vette's Z06 model produces 406HP naturally and at a sticker price under 50k. Granted its ugly as sin in my opinion, but still. Is this motor going to produce more torque than a pushrod V-8? I doubt it. Sounds to me like porsche needs to spend more time on engine development.

Just my 2 cents of course.
