Question Cone Filters

Does anybody with a 944, or 924S have a cone filter? Plus, this directed to anybody, is it worth that extra money more than the K&N?

Thanks kcak85-87 924S <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" />

i gots a cone filter connected to my afm, doesnt do anything but change the sound. i'm going to get a pipe custom bent this week and do some cutting and drilling for my cold air intake idea, people who have moved the air filter swear you feel a diff in performance for the bettter, so i shall soon find out.

Many times people do notice a difference in improved throttle response due to the less restrictive path for intake air. I don't think there is much if any HP improvement, especially without some sort of cold air arrangement.

I went with the K&N Flat panel filter and left my airbox alone. If you cut the lid or drill holes then you run into the "HOT engine air" intake issue. Hot or Cold intake is still under debate but it makes sense that Porsche designed the car to suck air from outside the engine compartment and I am going to keep it that way.

Some guys are trying to get the best of both worlds by putting a cone out in the fender well.

Here is a look at my MSDS again:

And here is what the inside of the adapter looks like:

I think if anything it smooths out the air flow into the AFM. The MSDS is the best looking adapter I have seen. Some of the others out there are just a stub of pipe welded to a plate.

As far as airflow and hot air is concerned, I don't really think that is an issue when you are moving. Air comes in through a couple of spots, not just through the radiator, so when the car is moving, clean air is coming in.

I have seen pictures of some of the cold air systems folks on the board have cobbled together and am not really impressed. On one of them the K&N universal cone, which has a solid rubber top cap, is essentially plugging the hole in the fender. Not sure how it gets maximum air flow from that cold air source.

The best idea I have seen for keeping the stock airbox is what Skip did. He cut the top off the airbox lid and used its outer rim to hold the K&N panel filter in place.

OK, here is a shot of where air can come in:

It's the same picture as above obviously, except I added arrows pointing to the spots where air can come in. The one I think most folks forget about is the one above the radiator. It is big enough for me to get my whole hand into it and is a straight shot from the nose of the car, bypassing the radiator completely. It has to let in at least as much fresh air as the hole in the fender. Take a look at it on your car, it is open to the entire area under the header panel.
