Talking 944NA brake upgrade done (with pics)

OK, worked on my brakes this weekend and upgraded the car to 951 hubs/spindles and 928S4 front calipers with Coleman slotted 2piece rotors and Powerhaus hats and adapters. The rears were updated to Zimmerman rotors and 951 rear calipers. I also installed a stock 951 bias valve. Went fairly smooth, took 10 hours to complete. There were a few snags, however.

1. the 2mm shim that Danno suggested for adapting the 944NA struts to the 951 spindles didn't quite work. Maybe due to paint or tolerance issues, but it needed to be about 1.5 milimeters wide instead, so I had to do some more fabricating.

2. The speed-bleeders that I ordered from Paragon were great, except for one did not work, even closed it shot fluid everwhere when I hit the brake pedal. I put the stock one back in to finish the job. so I have 7 speed bleeder valves and one stnadard bleeder valve at the moment. No big deal, really.

Braking power is greatly improved, to be expected...I have to change my driving techniques a little bit to keep from putting my girlfriend thru the windshield when stopping .

Excellent looking work, envious on many fronts, as the na engine doesn't offer much in the way of tuning, braking is the way to go - it is just a much fun as accelerating. That is a VERY nice looking car - even if it is red.

Tell your girlfriend to wear her seatbelt and you two give those inertia reels a pummeling for me.

Thumbs up

Great job!! I see also that you did yellow Koni all around... nice. Those are the wheels I want for mine... to be able to do the brake upgrade as well... so much to do... so little time... so little money...

Nice looking car!!

Tifo, that is one nice car. You should be proud of it. I was thinking that when you get the SFR supercharger you should just get a slotted nose panel and maybe a splitter and forget the 951 repro nose.
Had a great time Saturday at the Porsche Kreuzer event. Did you get any pics of the black '83 944? (The lowww one)If you did could you e-mail me a couple? I ran out of film before he got there.
Guess what, my car won first place in the water pumper category!! The voters must have been drinking.

I almost forgot, what did you make the turn signal lenses out of? I like the look. They looked like the plastic stuff used for flourescent light panels.
If anybody wants to paint their tailight lenses, I can say that it looks very nice. On Tifo's car I looked closely and you really can't tell that the amber was painted over. It looks like it was made that way.

Thanks Pete! I have some of the black car, when I download them and shrink the file size I'll send them to ya.

Hey, Eric said they were looking for me to give me the award, but since I had left early, they gave it to the second place car (You?). Is that what happened? Not that it matters, but I wanted to have ammo to yell at Renee for asking to leave early ....

Tifo,
That is a nice car. It is a true testament to us fanatics that we can maintain these almost 20 year old cars up to such high standards. Cars that are maintained to be driven for the mechanical masterpieces that they are and not to be some garage queens.

There was meant to be a Graemlin after my dig about the colour - just so you know

Text can appear so cold.

Man, I wish i knew what the hell you were talking about when you were going through the list of things you put on there....I would love to be able to make modifications like that on my car. (that is, if I can ever get the damn thing fixed)

nib5,

No harm done. I know whatcha meant! You know, when I was looking for a car I DIDN'T want red (black was my first choice), but this was the best car in the best condition of the many that I looked at. By the day after I bought it, I loved the color, though...

Mouse----Let me know what I can answer for you and maybe I can help!

Hey Pete, give me a call. I can come by and help you break those rear eccentric bolts free. I've done 3 944's so far, I've got that down to a science now on the rear drop procedure. Eric told me you were having problems and needed help...

I'll take you up on that offer. My impact wrench wouldn't budge those things. I'm busy this weekend but the following weekend is ok. E-mail me your phone # and we'll set something up.

Sharp looking car!
! Your suspension set up is just what I have been considering....How is the ride/handling? Is the 250lbs/28mm combo to stiff for extended drives.....How about wet handling?

Hey OVERBOOST,

It doesn't seem too bad, the longest drive I have done is about 50 miles in it since the upgrades. It doesn't feel overly harsh, but the roads are definetly in good condition here. By comparsion, my girlfriends brand new 2002 Honda Civic feels like a luxury car after riding in my car.

If it were my daily driver, I would consider going to a smaller torsion bar and 200lb springs up front, still keeping the Koni's.

Wet handling? Not sure. I haven't ever had it out in the rain with the upgrades. I would bet it is pretty good, the Michelin Pilots are very sticky and should do well in the wet with thier tread pattern.
