What is it with people?
Ok...
I'm out of town at a seminar for work when one of the speakers, on stage, makes mention of his two Porsches; a 911 and a Boxster.
Cool! I say to myself...gotta go talk shop with him! At one point he is standing right next to me with no one talking to him, so I walk up to him with a smile and say "hey there! I'm a Porsche owner too! Got an '88 944 Turbo S!"
He looks at me as if I have three heads. His response? He says "Oh".
So I continue, thinking maybe he didn't understand my interest. "How do you like the Boxster compared to the 911?" He says "It's nice".
That's it. He obviously does not want to chat about Porsches. No, he was not distracted or busy.
What's the deal? I don't think anyone should own one of these fine cars unless they truly understand the "specialness" of owning one.
I could understand if we were BMW owners or Mercedes owners. TONS of people drive those. But Porsche? As I said...something special.
I gave up, somewhat embarrassed, and walked away.
Why are people such shmucks?

just giving you a hard time...Boxster owners, in addition to often being labeled as pompous, self absorbed automotive no-nothings tend to get offended when their shiny metal fashion statements are referred to as Boxters...lol

Same thing here. I've seen/talked to every Porsche owner/driver in my area...there aren't a whole lot of Porsches in this part of Arkansas (or any part for that matter ). Even if they have out of state tags, I talked (mine blew at a stop light btw) to them when they pulled in for gas or whatever their business might be. There is one guy here who refuses to acknowledge any other driver. He actually went so far to cut me off one time so he could go after some ugly bitch (saw him trying to get some when I drove back by). Me and a friend, Tony in his '87 N/A, were driving around one day and saw him on the side with his hood up...Tony gave him a piece of his mind on being friendly to other drivers. We don't see much of him anymore, guess he was too full of himself to ask another driver for help. <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

I'm tempted to post in the Boxster forum:
"Where do you other owners carry your students exams?"
I know its not fair to generalize, but why do I picture them like a bunch of jerks, like the economics professor in Rodney Dangerfield's "Back to School"?
That's right I'm jealous.

I always thought boxsters were geared toward the female driver. Kind of like a volkswagon cabriolet. No offense to women, of course.
951badger, the guy you were talking to probably didn't know what a 944 turbo s was. He just bought what the guy at the dealership told him to get. You ever see one of those guys at an autocross. I've seen numerous ---wipes show up to events and then turn around and leave when they hear the tires start screeching. Most don't know where or what a dipstick is and don't know the most basic specs of their car.

I'm thinking he was just trying to cover up the fact that he didn't own EITHER ONE, he just happened to read some inflight magazine that mentioned the two cars, and he saw Porsche and decided to drop a status symbol into his speech.

i was visiting pennsylvania in the beginning of july and i saw a porsche dealership with a porsche and ferrari in the window that were all customized for track racing so i stopped to look, when i went inside i was expecting them to laugh at me and say "kid get out of our building" or something.... anyway i talked to one of the guys who worked there who told me that a few of people at the dealership (including himself) drove 944s..... the point of the story? ...i have no idea. but its kind of cool that the guys who work with porsche every day drive the same kind of car as me and werent those guys i see in boxters or new 911 who look at me like an idiot

Hey now! Don't be running down a 911 owner. There are those of us who have a water cooled car (1989 944 Turbo) and an air-cooled car (1984 911 Targa) in our garage.
