[quote]Why would you want an automatic anything? Unless you have some kind of dissability where you can't drive a standard transmission.

As an Automatic owner, I have to step in and defend our heritage
If any of you read the Special 100th Issue of Excellence (April 2001), you would have discovered that in a shoot out of 5 turbos (959vs996vs993vs964vs993), Danny Sullivan pulled the fastest laps in the only tiptronic of the 5.
Danny used to own a 959, and he stilled bettered the 959's best lap (Sears Point) by over 5 seconds with the tip.
Tim, I don't believe Porsche introduced the automatic, and tiptronic trannys for the disabled. Granted the 944 automatic is the slowest of the 944s, but its still a pleasure to drive.

the e46 m3 has a similar paddle shifter like the ferrari, works much the same way, using hydraulics to simulate a clutch without a clutch pedal. i dont know how fast the ferrari shifts but the smg-ii (as what it's called in the m3) can shift far faster than any manual transmission possibly can. i read somewhere the smg-ii cuts 0-60 times on the m3 nearly .5 sec, that is a BIG difference
what i wanna know is, is it possible to put that transmission into a 944?

The paddle shifter on the 360 modena is far superior to the one in the 355. It is actually faster than the manual.......A true technical marval. Personally, I would opt for the manual. But a paddle shifter is not an automatic. And the newer triptronic now on the 996TT is incredable..........but then again, I wouldnt want one. And I drive in heavy traffic EVERY day.
