Post A/C compressor clutch stuck???

Last summer my A/C worked perfectly. I know it's still winter, but...yesterday I decided to turn the a/c on, just to get it turning over again, since I haven't used it in several months. Well, nothing happened!! After I push the button, the revs don't drop like they normally would, and the compressor doesn't seem to be engaging (I looked under the hood, and the pulley is still free-wheeling).

I think I heard a bit of a clunking sound, which I assume was the clutch trying to engage, but then the sound stopped and the compressor pulley didn't engage. Anyone have any ideas? Should I hit it with a hammer, and see if somethings just stuck?

I heard that low refridgerant levels will prevent the A/C compressor from engaging. Maybe you can have a shop check the level?

Sounds like a new compressor is in order. They do have to be run occasionally. good Luck.
