Post 944 NA Top Speed?

Last night I took her up to an indicated 120 MPH for a few moments on a relatively deserted downhill section of the 57 Fwy North below the 210 Fwy( for those of you familiar with L.A. area freeways) Bjut I id keep it at about 90 MPH plus for awhile. She runs smooth as can be.

It got me wondering. I think I read that we are governed to about 133MPH max. Is that correct? What will this car do, what will the 951 do and are there differences in the model years?

I never run this fast, just curious.

I've heard the NAs are good for 136, not governed, they run out of steam.

The fastest I've ever been on a deserted strech of road is around 133-135 in my 84'. I have checked my spedo and its pretty accurate. But ya, it pretty much ran out of steam, I still had a touch more rpm's to go but no deal. It also took a long way to get there, no wind, pretty flat road. I no way endorse doing this anywhere near anyone.

IIRC, the owner's manual in my '88na showed 136 (maybe 135 or 137?). I dunno if that's RPM or drag limited, tho'.

Jim, mountain roads don't have straights that long....

Thanks guys,

Yeah, I was on a slight downhill so I got up to 120 reasonably fast. But I was very aware that I was doing 120 in a 16 year old car and that the SLIGHTEST thing could cause...well...death! I doubt I'll ever drive it for any sustained period at over about 90 to 95. As smooth as she is, I don't run her that hard. She's pretty and deserves better "later years" than to be wrung out.

my 88 na does 130, never pushed any further yet. looks like at the high 130s the rpm reach redline, not governed just runs out of power..... i need to find a way to go faster

They DO run nice at speed though, don't they. I've had mine up over 100 3 or 4 times in 3 1/2 years, might have hit 110 or so tops, above that the stakes are too high for my taste (on the street anyway).

After an MSD 6AL ingition (and various other ignition upgrades) I managed to scrape 140 just before thinking I saw State hiding in some trees on the highway. It was fun...I've only gotten my bike to 145, need a steering damper. Looking forward to breaking it.

This isn't really meant to brag, but its amazing how smooth these cars can be at speed. I took the 951 out for a drive today and it wasn't until I looked down that I realized I was doing about 85.

I've had the car up to about 140 or so and it was still pulling.. but I'm really afraid to try it anywhere around here.

I decided to try this once with my 86 944 NA. Turning a VERY mild corning and travelling slightly downhill I almost had the needle to 140MPH. It was almost 2am so I figured there wouldn't be any cops.

Dan, like I said, I used the MSD 6AL box and the Blaster SS coil...good for about 47 grand in voltage, when supplied with a full 14.4 volts from your system. I also went with Bosch Platinum +4 plugs and stock wiring...although I've heard that with that much power, stock wiring tends to lose conductivity and will eventually lose almost all of its electrical properties. I'd check with Paragon about their 8mm wires (mine were 7mm). Hope it helps.

I only pulled up to 95mph, and that's the fastest I will go. Any faster and I'm afraid one wrong bump and the car will be demolished. The car eats the road at fast speeds, most of the cars on the highway slow down when they see you zoom past them. The handling on the cars are excellent.

I've had my '86 944 up to 130 before running out of road. They take for ever to get there. Just don't have the steam like the turbos do. Your right though, you can tell that they are made to drive at break neck speads... mine just purrrr'd @ 130MPH.

The '89 951, well that's a different story. I had it going 120MPH on the test drive in no time flat. This car honestly scares me with power that it has. I think the manual states 162 or 163. Don't want to find out though

Take care all and drive safely!!!
