Post 951 SUV Roof Rack

Well, OK it's not exactly and SUV but it works, especially since I don't have a truck.

Anyways, I wanted to install a rack on my 951 that would not tear it up every time I installed it and took it down. I decided on the Yakima rack and am very pleased with it. The following is the list of parts needed from Yakima to put a rack together: BTW-Don't forget to put the vinyl tape around the clips as this protects car from the metal. The towers are protected from the roof by a large piece of rubber.

Q-Towers Part #8000105
Q4 Clips Part #8000604 (2)
48" Cross Bar #8000408
44# Fairing #8007048 (Optional)
SKS Lock Cores-4Pack # 8007204
Mako Saddles #8004019 (2 Pair for kayak/canoe)

There are plenty of other options for kayaks and of course bikes, surfboards, etc.

Here are a few pics of what it looks like.

You might notice the 968 Rear Hatch/Wing...It's been on for about a month now and I love it...I would like to thank Tom Pultz for his help with answering my numerous questions on it. Thanks Tom!!!

I have a factory 944 roof rack.I bought it few years ago for my previous 944.Have used it only once, when me and my son have a skiing vacation in finnish Lapland.
This original rack is a little bit differen what comes to that rear rack.It will bolt on to those four screws which can be seen when you open rear glass.Paid 25€ for that rack system..

Hey Shaun,
Yes, I live in the Mission Bay Area, Crown Point to be exact. Where abouts are you? Speaking of auto-x events, when is the next one down at the Q? Are you going to be participating?

Guy,

Roof rack looks good. On another topic, I noticed your 951 has the 968 rear wing. I've been interested in adding a wing like that to my '87 951. My questions are did you have to replace the whole hatchback glass w/wing or just pull one off another car and put in place of old 951 wing. What kind of price did you pay and how easy was installation. I think it gives the car a sharper look to it than the standard rear wing. Thanks for the info.

Hey Ross,
Yes, I decided to change out the entire rear hatch/wing, as one, at the same time. I found a good example of one through PAP parts outside of Atlanta and had them ship it to a local body shop here in San Diego. They installed it for about $60. The hatch glass arrived in great condition but the black Fibron wing was a bit scratched up and the center light element was a bit rusty when I took it apart-so I replaced that element and lighting assembly. If you buy one sight unseen, then make sure to have someone look it over carefully. I spent around $700 for the 968 hatch/wing including shipping cross country.
You can buy just the wing and replace the original with it, but it appears to be a real PITA. Check out Tom Pultz's Site or GT-Racings Site for help and other options.
I agree with you, I thing it gives it a more finished and updated look, though I still like the original spoiler...hey it's the original, right.

Thaddeus-Good idea next time I have the Kayak on, I will turn it upside down and will gun it to 140....I'll bet I have more downforce than those Le Mans type cars .

So thats what those bolts along the body by the rear hatch are for! I read somewhere that someone bought a spare sunroof from a j-yard and bolted a rack directly to it. Now that would solve a lot of problems.
