Followed this procedure today and it worked well in the end. First used 400 grit sand paper that didn't work then vinegar and more 400 grit, still didn't work. It looked like the contacts were not touching as described in one post so i tried bending them. Still didn't work then with the resister in the car and the blower set to one i gently pressed on the contact that had looked loose with a toothpick and it started. So it just needed a little more bending than i had given it even though it looked like it was touching.

Dear SoCal Driver..Would you happen to have a late model DME for that car, before you scrap it? I need a core to send to Ftech9 for an upgrade to my 83. Thanks

Yeah back when I had my Dove Blue 1989 944S2. Good times (mostly).

Holy crap! I can't believe this actually worked! My car's fan only worked on high. I took the resistor pack out, removed the rubber gasket, submerged it in white vinegar for 60-90 minutes, blew it off with compressed air, popped it back in and voila! All 4 speeds work now!

Thanks guys for posting this. My 1990 S2 interior fan had recently stopped working and only blows on full, google brought me to this thread, took resistor pack off lightly sanded the copper spring connecter, sprayed all connections with contact cleaner. Allowed to dry, put back together and working perfectly. Just in time for the UK summer.. Owned the car for 27 years and still only on 81K miles - really must use it more!

Glad to see this thread is still alive, I have the same "fan only on high issue". My question is how to unplug the electric connection on top of the assembly. I tried wiggling it by hand but it did not come off, and before I try harder to actually pry it off I wanted to ask if this is some type of captive connection that one must "know the secret release trick" or do I just need to slowly continue to try and pry it off. Last thing I want to do is break the stinking connection before I ever get a chance at cleaning the unit and create a more difficult problem to fix!
Thanks! GM

Perhaps I was over optimistic that this thread was still alive.

I do not recall anything unusual about that connector

Ah OK. Good to know. It may be that the "captiveness" of those connections are also corroded then. Thanks.
