Post New Guy Here, Have Some Questions...

Hey Everyone,

Great list, great info. Been reading the lists for awhile. I have 1985/1 944. 97K miles. Guards Red, with tan, brown interior. Can't stand the color of the interior. I would like to change out the interior and customize it. I figure I can do the work myself, and was thinking about painting the vinyl once I pull it out. Any reccomendations on products to use to paint the vinyl and restore the interior?
Any reccomendations on companies for carpet kits?

I plan on changing out the interior to all black, with brushed aluminum accents everywhere.

Anyone have an idea of what an average price is for a paint job, just so I can get a rough idea? I have some "orange peel" on the roof and a spot about 8" wide on the passenger door, of all places. Otherwise the exterior is awesome.

Also, how does one determine what type/size of wheel spacers to install? What size is good for the 944 model?

Will probably have more questions later.

Any help would be great....

First,I've had very poor luck with painted vinyl and don't recomend it at all. I have yet to find any brand of vinyl paint that I think would work even HALFWAY decent. Second, You're seating surfaces may be leather, I don't know of any 944 that had vinyl seats. Third, If you do a VERY good job it will not lower the resale value of your car that much, anything less will cost you though.
If it is really important to you that your interior is black, your best bet would be to get a complete black interior from someone who is building a track car or from a wrecking yard and just install it.

Same color will cost less than a color change. Check the archives, we've had a few threads on paint before and you'll find posts with prices from people all over the country (cost varies due to differences in the cost of living in different places).

Anything you add is just one more weak link that can fail. Other than that it still depends on what you want it for and the MY of your car. There was an offset change in the begining of '87, there are wheels available for either offset so you don't need spacers if you choose wheels that already have the correct offset.

Check the link in my signature and I have some pics of my interior. The door panels were stripped of the carpet and recovered in black vinyl then I painted over it with some red vinyl paint. I also used the same paint on the plastic pieces.

I have a parts car and still have many of the interior pieces (door panels, rear panels). That might be a good way to go also. Look around, someone might have things you need
