I've heard alot about the oil cooler seals going out and mixing the oil and coolant. Has anyone tried to ditch the factory oil cooler and go with a front mount air/oil cooler? It seems like this would be a once and for all fix for this problem. Are there other issue involved with the system than just cooling lines and oil lines?

I think the seals in mine were original, meaning they lasted for 17 yrs. and 150k mi. If you change them once you shouldn't have to do it again, or go to all the trouble of building another system. Also, you would have to close up the block--it's no just a matter of lines.

Yeah, you could do that, but how? You could try and retro-fit a 951 housing along with a 951 cooler. But you still have a seal that separates the oil & coolant sides. Blurry951 finally got his engine back from AMW after fighting a mixing oil & coolant problem for close to 2 years! Turned out the problem was just one tiny little seal.
You should just replace the stock seals every once in a while as preventative maintenance. After all, these cars ran fine when they left the factory...

I am having oil and coolant in my 85/2 944 Expansion Tank for the second time in the space of three weeks, after changing seals each time. Now I'm think it's the head gasket.
Which tiny seal was it that was giving Blurry951 the problem?
I'm going to look at a 951 housing a work with a machine shop to see how it can be adapted.
