Got a 1985/2 944 that was sitting for a long time. As a precaution, among other things, I changed hoses, belts,and serviced the oil cooler because oil was found in the Expansion Tank. After 4 days of driving oil was foung in the Expansion Tank. Did not notice coolant on the dip stick but of course it showed that the oil level was low. The oil cooler was again serviced (new gaskets and O-rings) and after a few days of driving, I again found oil in the Expansion Tank, no coolant on the dip stick but oil level was again down.
Could it be the head gasket causing this problem?

did you flush the system? we ran rags through the pipes, and ran the car with laundry detergent in the system for a few days. you may have fixed the problem, but not cleaned out the system.
